DC Comics may be struggling when it comes to creating their own cinematic universe, but a place where they have always shone is in animation. From their signature DCAU films and classic nostalgic tv shows, animation is DC’s sweet spot. Young Justice premiered in 2010 and more than 10 years later is still regarded by DC fans as one of their best offerings.

The show makes a big-time jump, with season 2 taking place 5 years after the first. There are so many important layered, complex character moments and well-thought-out plot points that happen before this jump that proves the show is a masterclass in superhero storytelling.

10 Kaldur’s Decision

As the leader of Young Justice, Aqualad had a big decision to make. He could either stay on the surface world and continue to fight crime with his teammates and friends or return to Atlantis and continue his studies with Mera and reconnect with his crush, Tula. After learning Tula has fallen in love with Garth, the original Aqualad, Kaldur realizes his destiny lies out of the sea. He must not keep dwelling on the past and decides that Young Justice is not only his future but his destiny. This decision helped the original team accomplish many great things during their time together.

9 M’Gann And Psimon’s Battle

In the episode “Bereft,” the team has their memories wiped by the super-telepath, Psimon, and Miss Martian is the only one who can stop him. They engage in a telepathic battle of brain and brawn, with Psimon initially gaining the upper hand. Superboy eventually is able to help M’Gann when she restores his memories. They are able to get Psimon out of M’Gann’s mind and back into reality, where her telekinesis creates a tornado that sends him far away. This moment was a great display of M’Gann’s powers and sets the stage for a future confrontation with Psimon.

8 Artemis And Zatanna’s Halloween Adventure

Artemis and Zatanna became fast friends after joining the team and their adventure on Halloween night was a fun way to see their friendship, and powers, in action. They are chased by the villain named Harm and discover his haunting past. Artemis’ hand-to-hand combat and tactical skills compliment Zatanna’s mystical powers and unexpected cleverness.

This episode also showed the other team members in a relaxed setting which made for a pleasant break from the usual “end of the world” scenarios. It was a great showcase for this female friendship and presented an intriguing mystery with a melancholy ending.

7 Tower Of Fate

“Denial” is the episode that introduces the team, and audience, to the mystical side of the DC universe. Kent Nelson is the man who protects the Helmet of Fate and when he wears it, allows the spirit of Nobu to possess his physical form and turn into Doctor Fate. When he goes missing, the team travels to the Tower of Fate, an M.C. Escher-inspired magical fortress where they do battle with Klarion the Witch Boy. The adventure in the Tower of Fate introduces viewers to the mystic arts, Doctor Fate, and makes Wally confront hard truths about himself he didn’t want to face. This episode also sets rules and raises stakes for later in the season.

6 Black Canary Therapy

After a telepathic training exercise goes gravely and horrifically wrong, the Young Justice team members are shaken to their cores. Dinah Lance, aka Black Canary, acts as the team’s therapist and sits them down one by one to talk about their trauma. When each member meets with her, Canary, and the audience, learns something new about them, such as Kaldur’s conflict about remaining team leader, Robin’s feelings about becoming the next Batman, and M’Gann feeling scared to show her teammates her true Martian form. Canary is able to lead the members to helpful conclusions in a quiet yet compelling storyline.

5 Wally Learning Impulse Control

Wally West, aka Kid Flash, lives life in the fast lane and sometimes acts too rashly. On his birthday, he is bummed out when he is sent to deliver a heart to a hospital across the country for a transplant instead of joining his team and the Justice League on a big mission. Acting impulsively and getting distracted along the way, he arrives too late and is told the patient has died. He eventually learns this was a ruse set up by Count Vertigo but his emotions over the event, and lessons learned, stick with him. He defeats Vertigo and walks away learning to look out for others instead of just speeding by.

4 Connor Meets His Maker

Superboy, aka Connor Kent, was not born but made. Connor was grown in Cadmus Laboratories and made from the cloned DNA of Superman, but there were always parts of his personality that couldn’t be explained. In the episode “Agendas,” it is revealed that Connor gets his anger, duplicity, and superiority complex from none other than Lex Luthor himself.

Luthor also presents Connor with “shields” that Connor can put on his skin and unlock his full Kryptonian powers with none of the humanity clouding his mind. This is a revelation and dangerous plot device that haunts Connor going forward in the series.

3 Artemis And Robin Defend Mount Justice

Young Justice Top 10 Moments Before The 5 Year Time Jump

Artemis and Robin are the only 2 heroes on the team without any superhuman abilities, and when Mount Justice comes under attack and their teammates are held hostage, it’s up to them to save the day. Red Inferno and Red Torpedo are “relatives” of Justice League member and Young Justice mentor Red Tornado, and are ruthless in their attack on the teenage heroes. This episode proves that superhuman abilities can only take you so far, and cleverness and cunning can sometimes be all one needs to save the day. After being doubted by herself and some of her teammates, this episode cemented Artemis as a true powerhouse on the team.

2 Zatara’s Sacrifice

In the episode “Misplaced,” every person over the age of 18 is magically teleported to an alternate Earth, and it’s up to the kids to save them from some of the most powerful magic wielders in the DC universe. The Helmet of Fate is seen as their best bet to take these villains down, and Zatanna puts it on, allowing Nobu to use her body as a host. However, it is her father, Zatara, that convinces Nobu to let her go and use his body instead, as he is more advanced in magic than his daughter. The two have a tearful goodbye and Zatara becomes Doctor Fate, a decision that plagues Zatanna for the rest of the series and sees her officially join Young Justice.

1 M’Gann’s Truth Revealed

Miss Martian had been going the entire season without revealing her truth to her teammates but in the penultimate episode “Usual Suspects,” M’Gann finally reveals her true form as a White Martian. Far more monstrous than humanoid, M’Gann explains the White Martians were not treated with the same respect and dignity as Green Martians on her homeworld and was terrified her friends would reject her once they found out the truth, so she adopted the form and mannerisms of her favorite sitcom character to blend in. This moment is a resolution to a season-long storyline for M’Gann and gives her newfound confidence going forward.
