Both Yugi Muto and Atem are some of the most iconic characters in all of anime, and it’s easy to see why. Together, they are the King of Games, the most powerful duelist of all time. However, they’ve also had some very wholesome moments throughout their time on the show.

Whether it is Atem or Yugi in the driver’s seat, the two are both incredibly caring people who give their all to their friends, even when sometimes, they weren’t necessarily friends with those people at that time.

10 Protecting Joey And Tristan From Their Bully

Despite Joey and Tristan bullying Yugi before they were friends (with Joey even throwing a piece of the Millennium Puzzle into a canal), when Joey and Tristan were being bullied themselves, Yugi stepped in to protect them – calling them his friends.

From that day forward, the three became closer than ever, with Joey even jumping into the canal and finding the piece of the puzzle he threw in.

9 Refusing To Leave The Pharaoh In Fire

After the Millennium Puzzle was stolen from Yugi – he won it back, but the Puzzle was stuck on a pole that was jammed into the wall, and Yugi couldn’t get it out.

However, he refused to leave its side, and Joey and Tristan had to work together to save Yugi, who surely would have died had his friends not come to his aid.

8 Winning Back Mai’s Star Chips

After Eliminator PaniK defeated Mai and took all of her star chips, Yugi knew that an injustice had been done. As such, he challenged PaniK to a duel in order to win the star chips back for her.

PaniK tried some nasty tricks, but Atem managed to win the duel and Mai’s star chips back, who repaid him by getting Yugi into the castle after Kaiba took all of his own star chips, making the two even. Yugi was kind to do this for Mai; he didn’t at all need to.

7 Protecting Mai And Joey From Marik

Another thing that Yugi did for Mai was protect her from a powerful blast from the Winged Dragon of Ra that would have surely killed her had it connected.

Joey had jumped onto the platform to try and save her, and Yugi protected both duelists from the blast. It’s a shame that this even needed to happen, as Mai more-or-less defeated Marik in this duel before Millennium magic came into the picture.

6 Surrendering To Rebecca

Rebecca and Yugi’s duel was a strange one, as it 100% mirrored the duel that Solomon and professor Hawkins had years prior.

Yugi surrendered this duel in order to teach Rebecca about the Heart of the Cards and friendship, two lessons that she took to heart and clearly didn’t forget based on later appearances she made in the series, such as in the Waking the Dragons and KC Grand Championship arcs.

5 Helping Joey Out Of His Deal With Duke

After Joey lost a random booster pack duel to Duke Devlin, he had to do everything that Duke said, including wearing a dog suit. Yugi wasn’t having any of this and laid his dueling career on the line to challenge Duke in a game that he created.

Yugi managed to win a hard-fought battle of Dungeon Dice Monsters and free Joey from his agreement. Duke later became a friend to the group, returning in various arcs of the show.

4 Letting The Seal Of Orichalcos Take Him Instead Of Atem

When Atem made the awful decision to ignore Yugi and activate the Seal of Orichalcos in his duel with Rafael, he lost.

Instead of the Seal taking Atem’s soul, however, Yugi harnessed the power of the Millennium Puzzle to allow the Seal to take himself instead, allowing Atem to go on and repent and save the world; an absolutely selfless act.

3 Winning Back Joey’s Red-Eyes

After Seeker took Joey’s Red-Eyes Black Dragon with his marked deck, Yugi put his own best cards on the line in order to help his friend win his best card back, something he didn’t need to do.

Despite Seeker cheating with a marked-up Exodia deck, he still lost to Yugi – whom Joey let keep his Red-Eyes until he earned it back, which he did by defeating Yugi at the end of the season.

2 Letting Joey Win Their Battle City Duel

During Yugi and Joey’s Battle City duel, where Joey was being mind-controlled by Marik, both of their lives were on the line.

In order to save Joey and finally break him out of the mind-control, Yugi chose to lose the duel through his own card effect. Luckily, Joey was there to save Yugi as soon as the duel had concluded.

1 Jumping Into Ancient Egypt To Help Atem

Despite not knowing what was waiting for him on the other side, Yugi, along with Joey, Tea, and Tristan, all jumped into Ancient Egypt in order to help Atem defeat Zorc once more.

They all did so without fear, knowing their friend was in trouble, proving how strong their bond really is.
