Zach Galifianakis is one of Hollywood’s funniest actors, having appeared in such movies as The Hangover, Due Date, and Birdman. He was nominated for a Primetime Emmy award for his lead role in the FX series Baskets and hosts the Emmy Award Award-winning talk show Between Two Ferns with Zach Galifianakis on the Funny or Die website. Galifianakis now stars as Mr. Link, a legendary bigfoot, in the animated feature Missing Link.
Congratulations on this movie. The thing that I loved about this was I never thought that I would like a Sasquatch, but you managed to do that. So, what was it about this movie that made you want to be a part of it?
Zach Galifianakis: Well I had seen Laika’s other movies and I think because it was stop motion, and the richness and how those movies were so textured and they visually, I think this movie is really kind of breathtaking, and that’s, I thought, maybe their past movies is why I wanted to do it. And also, I knew the character seemed like something I could do. Sometimes you get things, and I don’t know, I mean I’m pretty limited as a…
I wouldn’t say that. I think you’re fantastic.
Zach Galifianakis: Well, anyway…
This is your best role in my personal opinion. A Sasquatch, what?
Zach Galifianakis: There is a lot of Oscar buzz. Yeah, I just thought I could do it. And you meet with the director and if they’re nice enough you just start working.
Yeah. Now, one thing that I find interesting about the whole process is that I assume that when you’re recording your voice for this, you are kind of isolated in a booth. So, does that make it more difficult than working on something like a live action film? Because you don’t have anyone to play off of.
Zach Galifianakis: Deepa, Deepa, right?
Yes. You got my name right.
Zach Galifianakis: Such a good name.
A hundred brownie points for you.
Zach Galifianakis: It’s a great name. What’s the last name?
Prashad.
Zach Galifianakis: Prashad.
Do you also think my last name is great?
Zach Galifianakis: Uh, I don’t like it.
[LAUGHS] I’ll change my last name.
Zach Galifianakis: No, I like it. But Deepa is a great name. But what was your question? Oh, it’s different. It’s not that it’s more difficult, it’s just different. So, you have to use, because the physical space is different. When you work on other things, there’s an actor there, and an actress here, and there’s a couch to sit on. So, in the animated stuff, you’re visualizing it in your head. They’ll show you some artwork here and there, but it’s different because you have to use your imagination more.
Right. And one thing that I’m curious to know, whenever an actor leaves the movie, I feel like part of that character leaves with them. So, after you wrapped up this entire process, do you feel like Mr. Link is now part of you? Like are you eight feet tall now? Do you weigh 630 pounds? Are you super hairy?
Zach Galifianakis: Uh, one of those three. If I could get a little taller because I took a little of that character with me, that would be such a bonus.

Zach Galifianakis: Yeah, I’m still five two.
Can I give you a recommendation? Lifts and some big bell bottom pants. No one will ever know.
Zach Galifianakis: Or Ace Frehley boots.

Zach Galifianakis: See, I didn’t think you would know that.
