The additional photography for the Justice League Snyder Cut recently alluded to by Zack Snyder could re-establish story points that were cut from the film before production after the reception to Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. Chatter for the Snyder Cut would kick into overdrive this past November, with the topic trending worldwide on the movie’s two-year anniversary. That day would also see Ben Affleck and Gal Gadot officially declare their support for its release on social media, in addition to a major influx of other big names in the film industry (with even Ryan Reynolds casually name dropping it at this past December’s CCXP.)

With the topic having now more than permeated mainstream discussion, there have also been noticeable changes in the comments Zack Snyder himself has made on the matter. While Snyder has previously stirred the pot considerably by sharing images from the film on social media, his recent reveals have been far more candid. In particular, Snyder would shut the door on the debate of the very existence of his Justice League once and for all by posting an image of the Snyder Cut version itself to Vero, with the caption “Is it real? Does it exist? Of course it does.”

Most recently, Snyder has raised eyebrows even more with the prize of the Snyder Cut fan poster contest, the actual slate used in the making of Justice League, complete with a message granting the winner entry to the set for hypothetical pick-up scenes for Snyder’s movie. While Snyder’s teases have grown increasingly unambiguous, this is by far the most blatant he has ever been regarding the Snyder Cut. However, there may be more to Snyder’s message than meets the eye, as it may point to an intent on his part to bring Justice League even closer to his original conception for it.

Justice League’s Original Script Was Rewritten For Being Too Scary

While the theatrical version of Justice League marked a sharp pivot away from Snyder’s original plan, it has also come to light that the Snyder Cut itself is also missing certain elements from the original script. Snyder revealed as much during a director’s cut event in March of 2019, explaining that the highly divisive reception to Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice resulted in the Justice League script undergoing a rewrite prior to principal photography. As Snyder explained, “the scary idea” was the major concept to be excised as a result of this rewrite.

Snyder would further elaborate that the scary idea in question would involve Darkseid murdering Lois Lane in the Batcave. This would set the stage for Superman to fall victim to the Anti-Life equation and join forces with Apokolips, which had previously been teased in the Knightmare sequence of Batman v Superman. Additionally, other aspects of the movie were also already known to have been altered before filming began, such as the design of Steppenwolf.

Snyder Has Teased Elements That Wouldn’t Have Been In His Theatrical Cut

The conversation around the Snyder Cut has not only become far more public in the last few months, but Snyder himself has also added a new layer to the discussion with his more recent teases of elements of Justice League that never went before the cameras at all. The most notable example is Snyder’s posting of an image of Superman in his famed black suit, despite deleted scenes and on-set images clearly showing Henry Cavill in the classic costume. Replying to a question on the post regarding the suit’s presence in the movie, Snyder would stress the point even more emphatically, stating “let’s put it this way, in Zack Snyder’s Justice League, he will have a black suit”.

This is a notable shift from Snyder’s prior teases and his explanation of the rewrite the Justice League script underwent. However, it becomes even more curious when factoring in the prize for the Snyder Cut fan poster contest (which Snyder awarded to Victor Ku this past Sunday.) Together, these latest developments suggest Snyder’s ultimate goal being not to simply get the Justice League movie he filmed released, but to reintegrate the jettisoned aspects of the original script as much as possible. Based on what is currently known about the Justice League Snyder Cut, if Snyder were to be granted sufficient resources, this wouldn’t be as tall of an order as it might appear at first glance.

A Lot Of The Original Script Was Shot

Although the Justice League script rewrite walked back darker elements from the original plan, a lot of what Snyder had intended was still retained. Snyder himself made this point clear while speaking about the rewrite, saying that “There’s a lot of it we shot, but the actual idea, the hard, hard idea, the scary idea, we never filmed.” While it’s not entirely clear how much of the original Justice League script was never filmed, there’s also plenty to indicate that Snyder nevertheless managed to film a great deal of what was originally planned for the movie.

Snyder’s social media activity has already displayed a night and day difference between the Justice League Snyder Cut and the theatrical version. Furthermore, Jason Momoa’s enthusiastic endorsement of the Snyder Cut after having seen it himself indicates that the rewrite still left much of the original screenplay intact. In other words, reinserting the concepts that had previously been done away with would not be out of the question if Snyder had the proper support in place for such an endeavor. Not only that, but the additional photography Snyder has alluded to would also make the most sense from a business perspective, as well.

It’s Worth The Investment To Make The Movie As Different As Possible

If the developments that have occurred since the fall of 2019 have demonstrated anything, it’s that there is not only a clear demand for the Snyder Cut to be released, but a growing one as well. Media attention for it has simply skyrocketed, with anyone involved with Justice League now being asked about the Snyder Cut in interviews completely unrelated to the topic. Furthermore, general interest among the public has grown exponentially, with even detractors of Snyder’s previous DC movies now intrigued by the prospect of seeing the Justice League movie that was entirely directed by him.

It’s not clear how much Snyder wants to add back into the film with the reshoots he has teased, but his mention of Batman, Superman, Lois, and Martian Manhunter being involved point to fairly significant story points being at play (and we already have some idea of what is needed for Martian Manhunter.) When examining the situation as it currently stands, additional work to bring the movie back to Snyder’s original plan to the greatest extent possible would not only be doable, but at this point would even be the smartest approach to take. Any release of the Justice League Snyder Cut would want to present as much of a contrast between it and the theatrical version as possible, in order to fully sell people on the idea that it is indeed a completely different movie. With Snyder being able to make further changes to bring the film as much in line with the original script as possible, the Snyder Cut would then be able to stand apart from the theatrical version that much more definitively, with the differences between the two being even more clear and unmistakable.

Of course, all of this ultimately boils down to Warner Bros. giving the greenlight, which they have yet to do. However, there’s no way to examine the evidence at hand and fail to conclude that the Snyder Cut has taken on a whole new life with the recent developments surrounding it. Furthermore, the additional photography Snyder has teased for the movie could not only more fully realign the film with his original vision, but could prove to be a huge asset to enable the movie to be marketed on embodying a truly never-before-seen version of Justice League.
