Someone has recreated the Zelda: Breath of the Wild sequel trailer with Nintendo 64 visuals. Announced back at E3, the followup to Breath of the Wild is one of Nintendo’s most anticipated titles coming up.

What can be said about The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild at this point? Many games come and go, but this title is still being acclaimed two years after its release on Nintendo Switch and Wii U. The game became the best-selling Zelda title in the United States, surpassing Twilight Princess. In many ways, Nintendo seemed to deliver an unbeatable masterpiece. However, as with the case with Super Mario Galaxy 2 and Donkey Kong Country 2, Nintendo is no stranger to following up on acclaimed titles.

Nintendo surprised everyone with Breath of the Wild’s upcoming sequel. The trailer’s creepy atmosphere was unexpected, setting itself up as darker than its predecessor, much like Majora’s Mask to Ocarina of Time. Although there hasn’t been any news since the trailer, that hasn’t stopped some creative fans.

A video game “demake” is remaking a game for an older console. A couple of notable examples are Final Fantasy VII for NES and Halo 2600 for the Atari 2600. Although these titles are of course inferior to their original counterparts, there is something appealing to seeing a game as if it were made in a previous era. That is the case with this Breath of the Wild sequel trailer recreation. A modeler and animator, who goes by The Regressor, demade the original trailer using a graphical style from the Nintendo 64 era. The music was also demade by chiptune maker vince94. Check out the N64 recreation below.

As viewers can see, The Regressor faithfully recreated the trailer and nicely placed it for release on the N64. According to the modeler, “My goal was not to replicate Ocarina or Majora’s Mask visuals exactly or be 100% technically accurate to N64/DD capabilities or specifications; only “similar” with artistic liberties.” In an alternate reality, this is how Breath of the Wild could have looked if the N64 was still the primary console. The only difference between the trailers is that the demake features some original scenes near the end, but they fit in with what’s going on.

Although the visuals for Breath of the Wild’s sequel will be in HD, there is something interesting about seeing the visuals rendered from a previous era. In some ways, the more polygon-like graphics make the already creepy trailer all the more unsettling. If Nintendo was to include a Nintendo 64 visual option, many longtime fans would likely go for it.
