Zendaya Responds To SpiderWoman Speculation

Spider-Man: No Way Home star Zendaya responds to speculation she will play Spider-Woman. The upcoming film directed by Jon Watts will focus on Spider-Man facing the multiverse, and Zendaya will appear for the third time as MJ alongside Tom Holland as Peter Parker and Jacob Batalon as Ned Leeds. The trio will be joined by a huge returning cast, which includes Benedict Cumberbatch as Doctor Strange, Jamie Foxx as Electro, and Alfred Molina as Doc Ock, to name a few.

In anticipation of No Way Home’s success, rumors have been swirling about the future of Spider-Man in the MCU. In November, Producer Amy Pascal seemed to confirm that another Spider-Man trilogy featuring Holland as the friendly wall-crawler is in development, but with only her words to go on, this is a tentative guarantee at best. Certainly, while doing constant promotion for Spider-Man: No Way Home, the cast has also skillfully avoided talking about the future of Spider-Man in the MCU and revealing anything that might spoil No Way Home for viewers.

This week, Zendaya, Holland, Batalon, and Cumberbatch joined Jimmy Kimmel to discuss their new film on Jimmy Kimmel Live! In a bit where children asked the cast questions, one boy asked Zendaya, “Are you mad you’re not Spider-Woman?” The actor, for her part, reassures the kid she was fine with being just MJ. You know, I can’t say that I’m mad. If there’s anything that I’ve learned it’s that, you know, superheroing isn’t always that easy. So I’m good.

Spider-Woman is set to appear in the animated film Spider-Man: Across the Spiderverse next year, but voiced by Issa Rae, not Zendaya. Attentive fans might point out that, even if she’s playing an original character, MJ doesn’t become Spider-Woman in the comics. Of course, this bit is all in good fun, and most people would agree with Zendaya that being a superhero is harder than it looks.

Speculation has been particularly rampant surrounding Spider-Man: No Way Home, and with the introduction of the multiverse in the MCU’s Phase 4, it is easy to feel that anything is possible. Stars from previous iterations of have already crossed over into the MCU – even though Evan Peters’ appearance as Pietro in WandaVision was ultimately a fake-out, the returns of actors like Foxx and Molina in No Way Home open all Marvel properties up as fair play in the MCU. It wouldn’t be too shocking to cast Zendaya as Spider-Woman either in or out of the MCU, but until Sony and Marvel confirm their plans for Spider-Man 4, 5, and 6, all fans can do is speculate.
