America’s favorite genre actor Bruce Campbell burst onto the movie screen in 1981 and became an instant unlikely hero in cinema. Before 1981, Bruce and his childhood friends Sam and Ted Raimi spent their free time making fun, horror films on their vintage video cameras in the mid-1970s that turned into a worldwide success and launched the chainsaw-wielding chin to superstardom.

From being eaten by gorillas in Congo to being a rich cowboy in Serving Sara, Bruce Campbell has proved through the years that no role is too big and no fee is too big for the fantastic actor.

10 Carl In Running Time (1997): No Score

Film director Josh Becker secured Bruce Campbell in his excellent noir thriller Running Time that had a couple of moviemaking gimmicks going for it. The film is shot in real-time like 24 with no visible edits or cuts like Alfred Hitchcock’s Rope and is shown in black and white. The film follows Carl (Campbell) who is released early from prison, picked up by his old criminal friends where they immediately plan to rob a business.

In the span of these 90 real-time minutes, Bruce flees from law enforcement, reignites with an old girlfriend, and comes to terms with his shady past. Campbell’s mix of dark humor, romance, and criminal actions is nothing short of stellar.

9 Bruce In my Name Is Bruce (2007): 38%

In 2007, it was known thought various interviews and discussions that there would not be a sequel or revamp of Evil Dead which was completely disappointing. Time has changed that though, but the closest fans got to see their leading man in a horror film with monsters and demons was My Name Is Bruce, where Campbell played a version of himself helping out a few kids stop an ancient terror from destroying the world.

It was a good filler until Starz debuted Ash Vs. Evil Dead. Watching the Jack of all Trades here was completely satisfying and meta in all the right ways.

8 Brett In The Majestic (2001): 42%

Frank Darabont (The Shawshank Redemption) made a film with Jim Carrey called The Majestic at the turn of the century that focused on the real-life Hollywood screenwriter Dalton Trumbo, which was recently made into a complete biopic titled Trumbo played by Walter White himself Bryan Cranston.

Bruce Campbell comes into play in an ironic real-world type of way by playing Brett Armstrong – a B-Movie actor in the 1950s that starred in Carrey’s films. His swashbuckling cameos and fantastic one-liners were pitch-perfect as one could imagine.

7 Surgeon General In Escape From L.A. (1996): 54%

John Carpenter returned to the dystopian United States with Escape from L.A. The only good thing to come from this outing besides Snake Plisskin on a surfboard was Bruce Campbell playing the Surgeon General of Beverly Hills in his short on-screen role. This marked the first time Bruce and Kurt Russell shared the same screen on film and it was an eye-popping spectacular one at that.

An unrecognizable Bruce has a chamber of grotesque people that are surgically impaired to appease his soul, but when he has Snake Plisskin captured, things backfire after a compliment on his one beautiful blue eye.

6 Coach Boomer In Sky High (2005): 73%

Before the Marvel Cinematic Universe laid their plans out with Iron Man, Disney knocked out of the park with their high school comedy about teenage superheroes learning to use their powers in Sky High. It was a perfect blend of comedy and action.

Once again, this film would star Kurt Russell and Bruce Campbell with the latter playing the gym coach equivalent Coach Boomer who decided what kid was a superhero or a sidekick and got sick pleasure out of watching these kids hurt themselves while learning about their unique abilities.

5 Ash In Army Of Darkness (1993): 73%

In 1993, the best and most perfect film was ever made – Army Of Darkness. This was the third film in the Evil Dead Trilogy of movies that starred Bruce Campbell as Ash who was transported back through time to the medieval days and forced to fight an army of the dead in order to be brought back to modern-day. It was a flawless blend of action, comedy, horror, romance, and excellent dialogue. Bruce even let the Ash character conjure up a ton of confidence for the character and lead him to victory in a war.

With his speech about the iconic boomstick and his penchant for screwing up three famous words, Bruce Campbell brought this character to a new existence in cult movie history.

4 Elvis Presley in Bubba Ho-Tep (2003): 78%

Don Coscarelli (Phantasm) adapted the Joe R. Lansdale book Bubba Ho-Tep into an outrageous and highly entertaining film that starred Bruce Campbell as a geriatric Elvis impersonator who thinks he’s the real thing. Additionally, this Elvis is in an old folk’s home where his best friend his an old black man who thinks John F. Kennedy’s brain was removed and transplanted into his as the two try to stop an ancient cowboy mummy who is sucking the souls out of the elderly resident’s buttholes.

Campbell was born to play Elvis and does a wonderful job at his voice, mannerisms with uproarious comedy. There’s been nothing like it since and Bruce just nailed it.

3 Ring Announcer in Spider-Man (2002): 90%

Before Marvel had their own movie studio, they paired up with Sony and made three Spider-Man films with Tobey Maguire, dance routine included. Sam Raimi sat in the director’s chair and there was no way he was going to make the biggest blockbuster of his career and not have his friend Bruce Campbell in the film.

What a role it was too as Campbell played the pro wrestling ring announcer to Peter Parker who told the teenager his name sucked, thus announcing him as The Amazing Spider-Man. It was a tiny yet pivotal role in the film and comics alike and Campbell performed it with vigor and comedic genius.

2 Ash In Evil Dead (1981): 95%

The debut of Bruce Campbell’s most iconic and recognizable character – Ash, took the world by storm in Evil Dead. Stephen King even got in on the action and professed his love for Bruce and this film about a group of friends having a holiday in the woods at a remote cabin where evil demons possess the living and kill everyone.

Bruce Campbell was one of these unfortunate souls, but he stayed alive through the whole film and took quite a bit of abuse on screen as his character survived. He wasn’t the typical hero, but rather just an average schmo who was put in a terrible situation where he came out on top.

1 Ash In Evil Dead II (1987): 97%

Several years later with a ton more money, Sam Raimi set out to remake his hit horror film with Evil Dead II: Dead By Dawn, bringing back Bruce Campbell as Ash to the wooded cabin haunted with terrifying evil. His character has a little more confidence this time out, especially once he lops his wrist off with a chainsaw and creates his boomstick and utters the word, “Groovy”. Bruce was destined to be America’s sweetheart from then on as the phenomenal action-comedy star that he is and provided the man-god with a lifetime of fans, praise and future work in film and television.
