Romantic comedies are great any time of the year, but they are especially delightful as the seasons change and the weather begins to cool down. Even for those in warm climates, it’s a blast to pump up the AC, brew a cup of tea, and relax for a couple of hours while a love story plays out.

Autumn is a special time for rom-com viewing. These ten films will be an excellent addition to any cozy watch list this fall.

10 You’ve Got Mail (1998)

Fondly referred to as a companion to Sleepless in Seattle, You’ve Got Mail will always be on rom-com favorite lists. Meg Ryan and Tom Hanks are an iconic 90s on-screen couple, and in tandem, they showcase an (early) Internet romance that gets complicated by real life.

Some people can watch this movie over and over again, and it is the epitome of cozy. With the changing seasons, the restaurant scenes, the Central Park strolls, and the warmth of the Shop Around the Corner, it doesn’t get much better than this movie for autumn. It is currently on Amazon for rent or purchase.

9 Tortilla Soup (2001)

Héctor Elizondo starred in this rom-com the same year that he was first seen as Joe in The Princess Diaries. The actor plays Martin Naranjo, a chef and widower who has lost his sense of taste and smell. He still manages to cook for his three adult daughters who live at home, Carmen, Maribel, and Letitia.

Each sister has a suitor during the course of the film, and the individual love stories are unique and engaging. Martin falls in love, too, but it’s not what anyone expects. Check it out on Netflix!

8 Only You (1994)

Only You isn’t the most well-known rom-com anymore, but it is quite cozy. Marisa Tomei is brilliant opposite Robert Downey Jr. Tomei plays Faith, a woman who played with a Oujia board in her youth and was told she would marry Damon Bradley.

In her adulthood, she finds herself on a wild goose chase for Damon Bradley — in Italy before she is supposed to be marrying someone else! The warm movie is truly something special, and it’s available for rent on Amazon Prime.

7 Girls Just Want To Have Fun (1985)

Sometimes, there’s nothing more comforting than grabbing a blanket and settling in for a reliable 80s movie. Girls Just Want To Have Fun is on Hulu, and it’s one of the coolest chick flicks of the decade. The fact that it shares a name with the monumental Cyndi Lauper song is impressive, but so are the performances.

Friends star Sarah Jessica Parker perfectly plays Janey, the new girl (and army brat) who wants to dance, and Helen Hunt plays Lynne, the fun friend who loves dance so much that she’s ready to audition for a show called Dance TV. As great of a gal-pal film as this is, it also heats up the flame between Janey and a boy named Jeff (Lee Montgomery).

6 Double Wedding (2010)

Deanna Warren (Tia Mowry-Hardrict) and Danielle Warren (Tamera Mowry-Housley) star in Double Wedding. It’s a hidden treasure of fall/winter rom-coms and has the twin power that Sister, Sister fans know and love. Deanna and Danielle are the best of friends, until they discover that they’re both dating the same guy by mistake.

Admittedly, this sounds like an odd premise, but it’s a well-written story that is fun to revisit. While the Lifetime movie does appear in an Amazon Prime search, it is not available in all locations.

5 When Harry Met Sally (1989)

Fall foliage fans need to look no further than When Harry Met Sally. This famous rom-com is totally Manhattan, and Billy Crystal and Meg Ryan made it the masterpiece that it is. Their eponymous characters meet in their twenties and drive across the country together. They aren’t so cordial in the beginning but eventually strike up a friendship, and it takes them twelve years to finally get together romantically.

This classic is currently on Amazon Prime.

4 The Proposal (2009)

The proposal has an all-star cast and is an instant fest for fall lovers. The movie begins with the office world of book editor Margaret Tate (Sandra Bullock) and her assistant, Andrew Paxton (Ryan Reynolds). Margaret coerces Andrew into pretending to be engaged to her so that she cannot be deported from the United States back to Canada.

Their charade leads to a snuggly Alaskan getaway in which they actually do fall in love. Andrew’s parents are played by Mary Steenburgen and Craig T. Nelson, and his grandma is none other than Betty White. Rent it on Amazon Prime!

3 While You Were Sleeping (1995)

In While You Were Sleeping, Sandra Bullock (long before The Proposal) is Lucy, a Chicago subway clerk who is head over heels in love with Peter, a man she doesn’t know. When Lucy saves Peter’s life on the tracks, she pretends to be engaged to the unconscious man.

There are just a couple of problems, though. For one, Peter is already taken, and Lucy falls in love with his brother, Jack, as the story goes on. The movie is the perfect way to ease from autumn into winter, and it is now on Disney+.

2 Life As We Know It (2010)

Life as We Know It is on Amazon Prime for rental or purchase, and it has a lovable rom-com couple in Josh Duhamel and Katherine Heigl. They play acquaintances Eric Messer and Holly Berenson, two adults who gain joint custody of their dear friends’ daughter when the friends pass away.

Holly and Messer can’t stand each other at first, but they put their energy into raising baby Sophie. Over time, the makeshift parents fall in love with each other. Just when it seems like everything might be lost, they find a way to be a family.

1 Miracle On 34th Street (1994)

This is a rom-com and family film rolled into one, and it’s perfect for the segue from Thanksgiving to Christmas. The 1994 remake of the original Miracle on 34th Street from 1947 has become a newer classic in itself. Mara Wilson’s adventures with Santa might be unconventional, but the scenes with her beautiful mother and eventual stepfather are the most heartwarming of the season.

This movie is available for rental or purchase on Amazon Prime, but the original 1947 movie is free to subscribers on Disney+.
