There are all sorts of video game series that drastically change the makeup of the industry, but Pokémon’s level of widespread success is nearly impossible to attain. Pokémon remains one of the most popular and lucrative properties in the world and the various anime series have nearly become as successful as the games.

The Pokémon anime series differ from the video games with how they feature a central protagonist, Ash Ketchum, who’s been around from the start and continues to grow as a Pokémon trainer. Ash’s metamorphosis has been incredible to watch unfold, but he still has the bad habit of throwing many Pokémon into battle who are only going to make his life more difficult.

10 Ash’s Gengar Is Growing Into A Liability

Gengar has become one of the most iconic Ghost-Type Pokémon and Ash has had several encounters with the Pokémon before he ultimately captures one in Pokémon Journeys: The Series. Gengar is one of Ash’s newest Pokémon, but he’d be better off to give the mischievous creature an early retirement. Gengar makes a strong first impression when he substitutes in for Pikachu during his first battle, but he still ultimately loses the larger fight. None of Ash’s subsequent battles with Gengar lead to success and in some of them Gengar isn’t even able to land a single attack.

9 None Of Ash’s Tauros Are The Key To Victory

Ash catches a whole gaggle of Tauros that are largely neglected during his earliest Pokémon adventures, only for the Pokémon to seriously come into its own in the Orange Islands during its battle against Drake’s Pokémon. Ash learns a lot with Tauros and he even adds it to his party for his upcoming League battle. However, Ash’s luck with Tauros plummets after this and the Pokémon experiences diminishing returns. Ash hasn’t regularly used Tauros in more recent years, but he still chases that high that he experienced and wants to recreate its magic in battle.

8 Ash Can’t Learn That Oshaswott Is Style Over Substance

Each new Pokémon game introduces plenty of strong Pokémon into the mix, but there are also lots of Pokémon who cater more towards cute creature designs. Oshaswott is by far one of the more adorable Pokémon that Ash catches in Unova, but he becomes blinded by Oshaswott’s personality and charm.

The Pokémon barely wins its battles and its number of victories only gets less impressive the more that Ash uses it in battle. It’s a Pokémon that’s proof of how an engaging personality can sometimes be dangerous to building an effective Pokémon party.

7 Gliscor’s Bark Is Worse Than Its Bite

Ash finds a real companion during the Diamond & Pearl anime series with Gligar, who eventually evolves into the more substantial Gliscor. Gliscor is actually pretty powerful, especially when it makes use of Giga Impact, but the repeatedly lost for Ash and didn’t turn out very positive results. Ash needs to learn that an intimidating looking Pokémon isn’t always the answer. Gliscor is currently being kept at Professor Oak’s Laboratory and isn’t in Ash’s current party, but he’s frequently done substitutions from his reserves and he needs to stop with Gliscor.

6 Ash’s Trainer Failures Doomed Palpitoad

Ash usually has at least has one powerful Water-Type Pokémon in his party that can fend against the elements when it’s necessary. Palpitoad is Ash’s Water-Type surrogate during his Unova journeys and his treatment of this Pokémon is emblematic of some of Ash’s worst work as a Pokémon trainer. Not only does Ash not get Palpitoad to evolve into its stronger forms, but he also consistently misuses it in battle to the point that it only receives a sour reputation. Ash has completely tainted the Pokémon and at this point he’s better off to just cut his losses with it.

5 Ash Can’t Finesse Torterra’s Naturally Slow Speed

Ash has learned a lot during his years as a Pokémon trainer, but he still has a number of blindspots and handicaps that still routinely trip him up. One of Ash’s biggest faults as a Pokémon trainer is that he’s not good with slow and bulky Pokémon. This isn’t a major problem when Ash first catches the Grass-Type Pokémon Turtwig, but he’s already struggling when the Pokémon evolves into the slower Grotle.

This only becomes more pronounced once it evolves into Torterra and at this point Ash has never figured out a strategy for how to properly utilize the big Pokémon.

4 Boldore Becomes A Literal Anchor For Ash

Ash’s time in the Unova region is full of fun, new Pokémon that Ash adds to his party, but one of the Rock-Type members of his team truly just becomes dead weight. Boldore currently resides at Professor Oak’s Laboratory, but Ash never experiences much success with the Pokémon and it’s further proof of his difficulties with slow Pokémon. Ash’s biggest problem with Boldore is that its previous form, Roggenrola, evolves so quickly that it tricks Ash into thinking that it’s a formidable fighter that shares a special connection with him, but it never materializes.

3 Ash Is Blinded by His Farfetch’d’s Drive

One of the most exciting things about the latest Pokémon releases is that they feature regional variants of old Pokémon. Ash’s catches a Galarian Farfetch’d in the new Pokémon Journeys: The Series anime; Farfetch’d is one of Ash’s newer but forgotten Pokémon. Unfortunately, he’s off to a bad start with it. He’s only used it in one major battle, which it loses, and it seems more content hanging out with Goh’s Farfetch’d. This Pokémon basically forces Ash to catch it because it’s passionate about fighting, which colors Ash’s perception on when to use it.

2 Buizel Starts Strong, But Has Nowhere To Go But Down

Buizel can be a powerful Pokémon in the right hands, but Ash’s entire relationship with it is full of issues. Ash originally obtains the Pokémon through a trade, so he’s already trying to change the Pokémon’s old habits. Buizel delivers an amazing first fight and even when the Pokémon loses in battle he still learns valuable attacks, but the Pokémon experiences a major run of losses, from which it never recovers. Buizel is introduced as a Pokémon that could change Ash’s luck, but it goes out with over five consecutive defeats until Ash leaves it with Professor Oak.

1 Ash Needs To Save His Lucario For Special Occasions

Lucario has proven itself to be one of the better Pokémon fighters and it’s even appeared in spin-off properties like Pokken Tournament and Super Smash Bros. Ash raises Lucario from an Egg and even though the Pokémon’s recently evolved form has shown results, it still had a very difficult time when it was still a Riolu. Ash loses multiple consecutive battles whenever he uses Riolu and the defeats greatly affect his World Coronation Series ranking. Ash’s repeated defeats show that he doesn’t know how to properly use Riolu against type and its evolution into Lucario was just a happy accident.
