10 Pokémon Trainers Worse Than Ash Ketchum

Ash Ketchum is often portrayed in the Pokémon anime as a model trainer, thanks to the kindness he shows his Pokémon. Yet that doesn’t mean Ash is perfect. Aside from losing his fair share of battles, Ash does sometimes let his ego get the better of him. He has even had bumpy relationships with certain Pokémon, such as his Charizard and Chikorita.

For all his faults, though, there are many worse Pokémon trainers than Ash out there. Some outright abuse their Pokémon, while others use them for selfish personal gain. A few even neglect human loved ones in favor of their Pokémon.

10 The Eevee Brothers Believed All Pokémon Had To Evolve, Whether They Wanted To Or Not

10 Pokémon Trainers Worse Than Ash Ketchum

The Pokémon anime was an early proponent of the idea that Pokémon should choose to evolve, like when Pikachu chose not to evolve to defeat Lt. Surge’s Raichu. However, not every trainer got the memo. In “The Battling Eevee Brothers,” a young boy named Mikey was pressured by his older brothers Sparky, Pyro and Rainer to evolve his Eevee like they had evolved theirs.

What’s more, Mikey’s brothers believed every Pokémon should evolve, and looked down upon trainers who disagreed. Watching Mikey’s Eevee defeat Team Rocket, however, convinced the brothers to change their mind, and they readily accepted Mikey’s decision to train Eevee without evolving it.

9 Anthony Neglected His Wife And Daughter To Train For A Fighting Pokémon Tournament

10 Pokémon Trainers Worse Than Ash Ketchum

There’s nothing wrong in being committed to Pokémon training… unless, of course, you neglect your family as a result. Such was the case with Anthony, who refused to return home to both his family without first winning the P1 Grand Prix, a fighting Pokémon tournament, with his Hitmonchan.

It took his daughter Rebecca jumping in front of Hitmonchan at the P1 tournament to protect it from Hitmonlee for Anthony to snap out of it. After Ash won the grand prix with his Primeape, an impressed Anthony offered to train Primeape. Ash agreed, while Rebecca promised to make sure Anthony also remembered his family commitments.

8 Lt. Surge Was Too Harsh In Battle and Patronizing Toward Trainers And Unevolved Pokémon

10 Pokémon Trainers Worse Than Ash Ketchum

Lt. Surge is a fairly iconic trainer and gym leader, but his early treatment toward trainers and Pokémon opponents—especially Pokémon who had not evolved— left something to be desired. Virtually any Pokémon who lost to him and his Raichu would end up in the emergency room, including Ash’s own Pikachu. He’d also call any trainer or Pokémon who hadn’t defeated him a baby (even before battle) and felt Pokémon should be evolved as soon as possible.

Surge’s tune changed, however, after Ash’s Pikachu defeated Surge’s Raichu. Surge awarded Ash with a badge and applause, and afterward routinely told other trainers about their battle.

7 Giselle And Other Pokémon Tech Students Treated Trainers And Classmates Like Trash

10 Pokémon Trainers Worse Than Ash Ketchum

Going to Pokémon Technical has its perks, including being able to enter the Pokémon League without having to travel the world and collect badges. However, the boarding school’s students can be pretty arrogant.

Aside from badmouthing trainers who didn’t go to Pokémon Tech, they’ve also mistreated novice students, such as by making them answer Pokémon trivia while on a treadmill whose speed they’d raise for every wrong answer. Among the most conceited was the Beginner Class’ top student, Giselle, who believed herself superior to everyone. Giselle became more humble after losing to Ash, although it’s not clear if her classmates did, as well.

6 Jessie, James And Meowth Use Their Pokémon To Commit Crimes

10 Pokémon Trainers Worse Than Ash Ketchum

Undoubtedly the most recognizable example on the list, Team Rocket’s most infamous trio are poster children for how not to be Pokémon trainers. Their relationship with their own Pokémon is more mixed than awful, however– while Lickitung and Wobbuffet weren’t treated very well, Jessie and James have had strong bonds with Pokémon like Ekans and Koffing.

However, it’s what they use their Pokémon for that’s the problem. Being Team Rocket members, Jessie, James and Meowth primarily use their Pokémon for theft and similar crimes, including stealing Ash’s beloved Pikachu. Thankfully, they rarely ever succeed and are often sent “blasting off” by Ash, Pikachu and their friends.

5 Yas And Kaz: Turned Pokémon Training Into A Gang War

10 Pokémon Trainers Worse Than Ash Ketchum

Yas and Kaz started off as a pretty rotten pair. The rival Dark City gym leaders held a gang war to see whose gym would be officially recognized by the Pokémon League, routinely recruiting out-of-town Pokémon trainers as gang members. Worse still, they would have their Pokémon attack any trainer who decline an offer to join them, like Ash when refused to join the Yas Gang.

Thankfully, a Nurse Joy who was also a Pokémon League inspector busted Yas and Kaz, declaring that neither gym would become official until the two trainers changed their ways.

4 Damian Left Charmander Behind After Taunting It For Being “Weak”

10 Pokémon Trainers Worse Than Ash Ketchum

Ash’s Charizard, a fan favorite, started out as a Charmander who Ash, Brock and Misty discovered sitting on a rock waiting for his trainer Damian, who had promised to return. Yet Damian had lied to Charmander and left it behind for good because he thought the fire Pokémon wasn’t strong enough. Worse still, Damian even gloated about it to his friends.

At first, Charmander believed in Damian’s goodness. Yet when he saw his former trainer’s true personality firsthand, Charmander chose to join Ash and his companions, who had shown him far more kindness.

3 The Squirtle Squad’s Trainers Abandoned Their Squirtles

10 Pokémon Trainers Worse Than Ash Ketchum

Sure, the Squirtle Squad seemed like a pretty rough crowd when they first appeared. Yet there was an understandable reason for why they resorted to delinquency: their trainers had deliberately left them behind. While none of the former Squirtle Squad’s trainers have never appeared on-screen, the repercussions of their actions were clear as day, as the Squirtles were undoubtedly acting out their feelings of abandonment.

Thankfully, Ash inspired the Squirtle Squad to become heroes (specifically firefighters) and their leader joined Ash for many of his adventures, proving that a good trainer can be just as influential as a bad one.

2 A.J. Whips And Overworks His Pokémon

10 Pokémon Trainers Worse Than Ash Ketchum

A.J., an undefeated trainer who owned his own (albeit unofficial) Pokémon gym, quickly gained Ash and his friends’ ire when they learned A.J. whipped his Pokémon and overworked them with strenuous exercise and uncomfortable machinery, especially his Sandshrew. Deep down, though, A.J. did care for his Pokémon, as seen by how worried he became when Team Rocket accidentally captured Sandshrew, as well as his attention to proper Pokémon dieting.

While A.J. did befriend Ash, Misty and Brock and helped them defeat Team Rocket, it was unclear if he planned on listening to their objections and changing his training methods.

1 Giovanni Mistreats Pokémon And Leads An Entire Organization Of Criminal Trainers

One of the most nefarious characters in the Pokémon franchise, Giovanni is a bad Pokémon trainer by several standards. Aside from playing favorites (e.g. giving preferential treatment to Persian over Meowth), Giovanni has also been known to treat certain Pokémon terribly. He’s conducted unethical experiments with Pokémon and exploited his creation, Mewtwo; he also keeps most of his Pokémon in cages.

Of course, Giovanni’s biggest claim to notoriety is leading his Team Rocket legions in various illegal endeavors. In the anime, these crimes tend to involve theft, kidnapping and exploitation; in the games, Giovanni’s agents have gone as far as to murder Pokémon.
