2004’s Anchorman: The Legend Of Ron Burgundy is very much the Will Ferrell show, so much so that his character name is in the subtitle in the movie. However, there are so many great members of the supporting cast, and there’s one actor more than any other that goes punch for punch with Ferrell when comes to improvising.

Steve Carell’s performance as the dimwitted weatherman Brick Tamland is just as good as Ferrell’s Ron Burgundy, and Brick arguably even has more iconic lines. Not only that, but Brick steals the show from Ron when it comes to the underrated 2013 sequel, Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues.

As Brick is the dumbest of the four members of the news team, it takes him a beat to catch up to what the other three are talking about, and this is the perfect example of that. After their work is disrupted by Veronica Corningstone, a woman who has the same rank as them in the workplace, they all take turns to yell about why they’re unhappy. When it’s Brick’s turn, he innocently joins in the yelling despite not having a clue what’s going on.

However, it’s another example, along with sexism in the workplace, that hints at the fact that the Anchorman series is much smarter than it’s given credit for. Or it could simply be because it’s outrageously funny. When Chani’s Boss criticizes the way Chani works, Brick is overly emotional. Weirdly enough, it’s easy to feel sorry for Brick, as he’s coerced by the gang into saying things he doesn’t completely understand. In Anchorman, in the midst of the news team wolf-whistling Veronica and treating her like a piece of meat, they convince Brick to invite her to a party in his pants.

However, in typical Brick fashion, he totally bungles the line. He delivers the line in a classy manner, but he doesn’t even understand what he’s saying. And what makes it sweeter is that he’s overly polite when Veronica declines his offer and he then offers the invitation to another co-worker right after.

Brick isn’t just stating the obvious with this quote, but as if the wind could possibly be anything else. Not only that, but it’s the perfect example of how inadequate Brick is at his job, how limited his vocabulary is, how he doesn’t know how to socialize, and how he crumbles under pressure. One of the biggest moments of the original movie, and one of the few scenes that were clearly planned and rehearsed given how spectacular it is, is the epic battle between newscasters. Leading up to that huge event was a bitter rivalry between the Channel 4 news team and the Evening News Team.

Early in the movie, the two groups of news anchors square off with one another, exchanging insults. Yet again, Brick will be Brick and not entirely understand what’s going on. He manages to scrape together this one-liner, and the funniest thing about it is that it took him so long to come up with such a flatline insult.

The battle between the news anchors is the best part of Anchorman, and the sequel has another battle on an even larger scale. But it was the first movie that saw Brick launch a grenade and literally wields a trident.

After Ron advises Brick to lay low because he’s probably wanted for murder, Brick fondly looks back on all the violence he caused. The gleeful way in which Carell delivers the line is what makes it a classic quote more than the actual words he says. And a third battle on an even bigger, Lord of the Rings-like epic battle is why fans need an Anchorman 3.

When Brick Tamland’s name is mentioned amongst fans, “I love lamp” immediately enters their heads. There are few quotes, not just from Brick but from any of the characters, that are more memorable than “I love lamp.”

When talking about all of the things that the four anchors love, Brick’s mind is yet again blank. It doesn’t begin and end with a lamp either, as he lists things that he spots in the room. Brick loves the carpet and the desk too, and it makes for Steve Carell’s very best movie moment.

1 Brick Gives His Own Eulogy

When Ron is getting the band back together in Anchorman 2, Brian delivers the news that Brick’s dead. But when they visit Brick’s funeral, the very person giving the eulogy is… Brick. The whole gag seems dumb even by Brick’s standards, but then again, he does have an IQ of 46. And there’s nothing more amusing than Brick being under the impression that he is dead.

As a bonus, there’s an easter egg in the scene for eagle-eyed viewers too. There’s a reference to the classic “I love lamp” scene from the first movie on his gravestone, only this time around it says, “I Like Toasters.”
