At the end of the month, Switch owners will be able to saddle up, throw on a ten-gallon hat, and bust a gut laughing when gag-filled RPG West Of Loathing comes to town. The hat is really the most important part, as the game promises “dozens of gallons of hats.” In a world where all the characters are stick figures, hats are the only form of character customization available. Still, the game wears its minimalistic style as a badge of honor, and hopes that players will find it charming and hilarious.

The studio behind the game, Asymmetric Publications, is known for its browser-based RPG Kingdom of Loathing, as Eurogamer points out in its reveal of the game. West of Loathing contains the same humor, but now with a Western setting and odd animations that really make use of the stick figure aesthetic. A trailer shows the crude characters in action, as well as the hijinks players can get into.

The game will give players a choice of three classes to tame the wild West with. “Talk your way out of trouble as a silver-tongued Snake Oiler, plumb the refried mysteries of the cosmos as a wise and subtle Beanslinger, or let your fists do the talking as a fierce Cow Puncher,” says Asymmetric.

Gameplay will take cues from 2D classical RPGs, complete with side quests, turn-based battles, and “over 50 hats.” The hats, a seeming selling point, take all kinds of forms. Or at least as many kinds as 50 will get you. The trailers shows the standard ten-gallon hat, a Rasta cap, and even a futuristic sci-fi helmet.

The real selling point is the comedy. Asymmetric refers to it as “slapstick.” If the trailer is any indication, the game relies on wordplay and general silliness for laughs. In one town, vendors can be seen selling Hot Food, Cold Drinks, and Tepid Candy.

West Of Loathing is certainly one of the more unique games in the Switch’s lineup. It’s currently available for $11 on Steam, which will probably be the price it goes for on Switch. Seems like a decent price for some good old-fashioned comedy.
