One of the monsters featured in Godzilla vs. Kong’s Hollow Earth sequence is recognized by both fans and the director as “Titanus Doug”. He was never named in the movie or the novelization, but the moniker has been welcomed by the fanbase. The expedition led by Dr. Nathan Lind (Alexander Skarsgård) into the mysterious Hollow Earth world below the surface has introduced a handful of new creatures into Legendary’s MonsterVerse.

Similar to the ecosystem of Skull Island, the land of Kong’s ancestors is the natural habitat for an untold number of unique plants and animals. When Dr. Lind’s team descended into this new region, they were instantly attacked by two members of an all-new monster species known as Warbats. Later, they were attacked by the carnivorous Hell Hawks. Fortunately, not everything they saw down there was a threat. There were also crab monsters that resembled rocks.

Immediately after their reveal, a few of them were devoured by a strange-looking, lizard-like creature who resembles Toho’s Baragon. Perhaps because of the friendly look on his face that has been taken as a smile, the Hollow Earth monster lizard has somehow emerged as a fan favorite, despite only appearing in one shot. Since the MonsterVerse didn’t give him an official name in Godzilla vs. Kong, fans reacted to him online and chose to call him “Titanus Doug”. It’s worth noting his species was called “Foetodon” (the name of the lizard monster from Peter Jackson’s King Kong) in the English captions, but since this hasn’t been acknowledged anywhere else, it appears he doesn’t have a canon name.

Regardless, it looks like the Godzilla fanbase has settled on Doug for the Hollow Earth lizard, which has been widely accepted. Legendary Pictures referred to him as Doug in a tweet, while Godzilla vs. Kong director Adam Wingard got on board too. When asked on Instagram about his actual name, Wingard commented he thought the consensus of the Hollow Earth monster was that he would be called “Titanus Doug”. It’s become a popular joke that’s picked up a lot of steam online, and so far, “Doug” is continuing to stick. Adding fuel was a joke by Wingard after being asked about what monster deserves his own MonsterVerse movie next. His choice was Doug [via ComicBook].

Doug is obviously too small to be a real Titan like Godzilla or Kong, but that doesn’t mean he can’t be used later in some capacity. In fact, Wingard promised in a Reddit AMA that if Legendary does let him make another MonsterVerse movie after Godzilla vs. Kong, he will definitely bring back Doug, as the monster “has a lot more to give” [via Reddit]. With rumors about Son of Kong being in development with Wingard attached as director, that chance might be right around the corner. Given that Son of Kong would presumably be set in the Hollow Earth with the focus being on much smaller monsters, an appearance or cameo from Doug feels like a no-brainer.
