Everything You Need to Know About Pokemon Sword and Shields Expansion Pass

Today’s Nintendo Pokemon Direct revealed tons of information about the company’s future plans for the Pokemon franchise this year. The biggest announcement revealed at the Direct presentation is that last year’s Pokemon Sword and Shield will be getting an expansion pass. However, Nintendo’s approach for the expansion of Sword and Shield will be different from past titles. In previous generations, Game Freak would re-release games with more content, such as with Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon, but for Sword and Shield, the company announced at the Pokemon Direct that it would be releasing an expansion pass instead.

As revealed in the presentation, the upcoming expansion pass for Pokemon Sword and Shield is set to introduce tons of new content that will introduce both new and old Pokemon, new locations, characters, outfits, and in-game items. So without further ado, here is a roundup of everything there is to know about Pokemon Sword and Shield’s upcoming expansion pass.

When Will The Expansion Pass Release?

The upcoming expansion pass for both Pokemon Sword and Shield will be released in two parts, with each having its own content to offer players. The first expansion is called The Isle of Armor, which is set to release by the end of June 2020. On the other hand, the second wave called The Crown of Tundra is currently scheduled to launch sometime in Autumn 2020. As of today, players can now pre-order the Expansion Pass on the Nintendo eShop, which is priced at $29.99. Players who will pre-purchase the expansion pass will be receiving codes for a Pikachu and Eevee themed outfits that players can download and wear in Pokemon Sword and Shield.

It is also worth pointing out that when the first part of the expansion pass releases this June, players are not required to finish the Sword and Shield to play. This would be beneficial for players who are just about to pick up either game, given that they will be able to access the content of the expansion pass and explore the new locations as long as they have a copy of either Sword and Shield and have purchased the expansion from Nintendo eShop.

The Isle of Armor

As previously mentioned, The Isle of Armor will be the first part of the expansion pass to be released this June. This part of the expansion will take players on a new adventure on a giant island that is inspired by the Isle of Man. From there, players will be able to explore new areas, which will include forests, beaches, caves, and more, that will, of course, be filled with a wide variety of Pokemon for players to discover.

The Isle of Armor also features a special dojo that will allow players to learn “very particular training styles”. Trainers will be able to take apprenticeships under the tutelage of the master dojo, which will improve their skills as a Pokemon trainer.

This expansion will take players to the snowy world filled with high mountain ranges and small villages. The new location is inspired by the vast landscape of Scotland, and the expansion will task trainers to lead an exploration team to investigate the mysteries of this new location. The Crown Tundra will also introduce a new Legendary Grass-type Pokemon called Calyrex, and the expansion will contain large new Wild Areas for players to explore and discover new Pokemon.

New Characters: The introduction of new areas to explore in Sword and Shield wouldn’t be complete without new characters to inhabit them. In The Isle of Armor expansion, players will encounter the legendary trainer called Mustard who held the title of champion for 18 years prior to the addition of Dynamaxing in Pokemon league battles. Two new rivals are also expected to appear in The Isle of Armor such as Klara who specialized in Poison Type Pokemon, and Avery who specializes in Psychic Type Pokemon.
