Dan Humphrey and Serena Van Der Woodsen’s romance on Gossip Girl was one of those excellent TV love stories, built on two terrible people doing terrible things to each other. Dan and Serena were incredibly sweet when they first get together, and fans were hoping for a romance for the ages. What they got was a hard lesson in why two people shouldn’t be together.

Unfortunately, they both turned into awful people who said and did some downright horrible things to one another. Gossip Girl is known for bringing out the “best” in people, and here are some of the worst things Dan and Serena did together over the years.

10 Dan Was Gossip Girl

No surprise here, every fan saw this one coming from a Brooklyn mile away. Dan was Serena’s stalker for how many years? Making Serena’s and her friends’ lives a living hell. Dan even goes so far to pretend he’s not Gossip Girl when he’s alone, reading the posts in a fake state of shock. The real kicker here though? Dan never took responsibility for the Gossip Girl fallout. Whenever he posted something to the website, Dan always made sure someone else was blamed. Keeping Gossip Girl going was more important than Serena, the woman he claimed to be the love of his life.

9 Serena Filmed Her And Dan Sleeping Together

To get revenge on Blair and Dan being in a relationship, Serena decides to make a film of Dan and her hooking up. The sex tape was dangled over fans’ heads, waiting to explode in a fiery blaze of drama. When the sex tape is released to a crowd of shocked teenagers at Cotillion, you would think Dan would have ended any form of a relationship for good.

Instead, Dan spends that night with Serena, and the two decide to get back together. Was no one thinking about poor Blair during this entire process?

8 Dan Slept With His Teacher

A hypocrite with a capital H. Dan made this huge deal about how Serena had slept with her teacher, Ben, when she was at boarding school. It turns out Serena didn’t sleep with her teacher but only had a crush on him; Lily added in the sleeping together rumor to “save” Serena’s reputation. When Serena introduces Dan to her Shakespeare teacher, Dan develops a crush on the said teacher. Sure Blair spread false rumors about Dan and the teacher sleeping together, but in the end, they did sleep together and got caught for it.

7 Serena Turned Dan’s Sister Into A Monster

All Dan’s sweet little sister, Jenny Humphrey, wanted was to have a small birthday party with close friends. Serena decides to turn her birthday into the perfect excuse to throw a party and prove to Blair she’s not having an affair with Nate Archibald, Blair’s highschool sweetheart. This party puts Jenny on a launchpad to high-popularity society in her high school, sending her spiraling towards a life of lies, drugs, and dropping out of high school. And doing a whole lot of horrible things to other people to become Queen J. Does Serena help Jenny when she’s down? No, she’s right there with everyone else, laughing at her.

6 Dan Slept With Georgina

Georgina wasn’t even a frenemy of Serena’s; she was a full-blown enemy. After yet another breakup between Dan and Serena, Dan was conned into a relationship with Georgina, even sleeping with her. Dan had no idea who Georgina was at the time, but he eventually found out and didn’t seem all that phased by it. Dan claims they didn’t sleep together, but might as well have? They obviously did if Georgina was showing up, later on, pregnant with Dan’s baby, and he thought it was his.

It’s one thing for your ex-boyfriend to sleep with someone you don’t like but to hook up with your mortal enemy? There’s certainly nothing worse he could have done.

5 Serena Continually Lets Dan Down

From cheating to running away, there isn’t much Serena has done to Dan that would make even the most headstrong person walk away. How much can one Lonely Boy put up with so much in the name of true love? Granted, a lot of these are done in the name of scheming by other people, Serena is still responsible for a lot of her horrible actions towards Dan.

The best part? After all that these two have done to each other over the years, they end up getting married to live happily ever after.

4 Dan Dated Blair

We lied, there is something worse Dan could have done, and he did it. Dan develops feelings for and has a relationship with none other than Serena’s best friend, Blair Waldorf. This storyline is bizarre and downright gross because the two detest each other at the beginning of the series. Now they’ve suddenly developed a fondness for each other over classic movies and their worry for Serena? There was zero chemistry between these two, so we’re not sure where the writers were going with this, but it was an awful thing for both of them to do to Serena.

3 Serena Only Thinks About Herself

Serena’s character started as someone fans loved until season 3, where she began to descend into an overly spoiled rich girl, who wanted all the attention for herself. Dan was thrown continuously out like trash when Serena found yet another “true love” of her life. Also, whenever Serena got into trouble, she always found the right things to do was running off and disappearing to some foreign country for weeks on end, leaving Dan worried about where she was.

2 Dan Writes A Scathing Novel, Starring Serena

Dan, the anguished author, finally got the book deal he’s been waiting his entire pubescent life for. But at what cost? The book was about his Upper East Side friends, the names carelessly changed to ones that sounded similar to their real-life counterparts. With one book, he managed to alienate his entire group of friends and family. Here’s the topper though, the book’s main character was named Sabrina (real creative, right?) and modeled after the supposed love of Dan’s life. The book’s release caused Serena to lose her Hollywood job and took a significant damper on her professional life. Dan didn’t even seem to have a sliver of remorse, truly the mannerisms of a psychopath.

1 Serena Never Understood Dan’s Perspective

Serena comes across as a sweet, caring young lady born into a world of Upper East Side privilege. While Dan’s not anywhere near-poor, he still was born with less opportunity than Serena has, and hasn’t had everything handed to him on a Tiffany spoon. Does Serena ever stop to walk in Dan’s shoes? Not really. Serena is often far too busy worrying about her problems and scheming to think about the fact Dan grew up with much less than Serena did. It’s not as though she has to walk on eggshells for the rest of her life; she needs to take a minute to understand Dan’s perspective on life, due to the fact he grew up in a different class than she did.
