Cobra Kai star Ralph Macchio sheds light on Terry Silver’s evolution in season 4. When audiences last checked in with the hit Netflix series that continues the franchise, there were several different storylines that boiled over. Fans were left discussing the assault on the LaRusso home, as a truce between the competing Eagle Fang and Miyagi-do students was spoiled by an ambush by the Cobra Kai students. This led into the closing scene of season 3, which showed Johnny (William Zabka) and Daniel (Macchio) teaching a karate class together that combined kids from both Eagle Fang and Miyagi-do.

But a quiet development throughout the Cobra Kai season 3 finale focused on the time that John Kreese (Martin Kove) spent in Vietnam. Through flashbacks, viewers see Silver and Kreese in Vietnam, along with a few other soldiers, and their mission takes a turn for the worse. In these past moments, the roots of the closeness between the two friends are explored. It also sets the stage for a favor that Kreese calls in during the present day. After some fan speculation about whether Thomas Ian Griffith would reprise the role of Terry, his involvement was confirmed in a Cobra Kai season 4 video.

Now, ahead of Cobra Kai season 4, which arrives on Netflix on December 31, Macchio speaks with Empire about Silver’s return. Teasing that the upcoming batch of episodes are “next level,” the actor explains that the series is going to show a different side to the antagonist. He also acknowledged that the one film that the character appears in, The Karate Kid Part III, wasn’t well-received, and that the new season would try to improve on that. There’s another angle to Terry Silver, and when you call upon those stories and dive into the grey areas, it expands the universe and the story. It’s this chance to take something that didn’t work, and try to make fruit out of it. Can it bear fruit? It has. Season four is next level.

Macchio has spoken about Terry in Cobra Kai season 4 previously, saying that the character’s involvement was well-planned. In his film appearance, he wasn’t exactly depicted in a redeeming manner. He’s introduced as a corrupting influence, helping Kreese get revenge on Daniel by hatching an elaborate plan to humiliate him. Though that counted as his only appearance in the film series, Terry has remained a lingering presence in the Netflix show and has been occasionally mentioned.

With the character soon making his first on-screen appearance in the present day, Cobra Kai will set out to do what it has since the series began. It launched by shifting perspectives, showing Daniel’s flaws and painting Johnny in a more favorable light than The Karate Kid allowed, before complicating that narrative again as it continued. By all accounts, it sounds like the villainous Terry Silver will be getting the same treatment decades after his initial appearance.
