Could Jim Gordon finally be getting revenge for The Killing Joke? The latest issue of The Joker has placed Gordon at a point where he could have a shot at the Joker. This would allow him to settle a very personal score.
Commissioner Gordon has a long history with the Joker. Batman: The Killing Joke—a graphic novel published in 1988—provided Joker the opportunity to try to drive Gordon insane, which he didn’t succeed at. Written by Alan Moore with art by Brian Bolland, this one-shot story has become one of the most popular Batman stories involving the Joker. He has continually been pushing the commissioner closer and closer to the edge of sanity and self-control.
In The Joker #2, written by James Tynion IV with art by Guillem March, Commissioner Gordon is seen considering a major opportunity. He has been hired to kill the Joker. While he hasn’t set his mind on the idea, he appears close to settling on a course of action. Though he seems reluctant, eliminating the Joker doesn’t seem too far-fetched—particularly given how much damage has been done to the Gordon family because of him. The Court of Owls is after Joker and Gordon is exactly the person with enough of a vendetta to see the job get done.
Batman: The Killing Joke tried to prove that any person could fall to insanity if they were pushed far enough. However, by the end of the story, Jim Gordon was not insane. His daughter Barbara was paralyzed and he was tortured, but ultimately he came out ready to fight another day. This story would see Barbara begin to fall into her role as Oracle, adjusting to life differently. However, the Joker’s targeting of Gordon and his family didn’t end here. As if paralyzing Barbara wasn’t enough, the Joker has also caused other aspects of ruin to creep into Jim Gordon’s life. Recently, his son, James Gordon Jr. was shown to have used Joker toxin while kidnapping his sister. He also broke the Joker out of jail before dying during the events of Joker War. James Jr. was a psychopath who had taken a darker path as a character: one that’s forcing Gordon to make a largely uncharacteristic decision.
Jim Gordon’s on the verge of wanting to kill the Joker. He has been hired for the job and isn’t coming clean about it. He knows Batman would try to talk him down and the only person he tells is Barbara. Over time, Gordon has come closer and closer to the edge of insanity – trying to save a city that has an endless supply of corruption and villainy, while his family falls apart around him in different ways. Now, it appears as though the commissioner could be on the final precipice. This is exactly the position that the Joker wanted to bring him to. However, killing the Joker would end some of the influence and root of some of Jim’s heartaches and struggles.
Killing the Joker would stop the villain’s crusade against him, but in some ways, it may also cause the Joker to win. Whatever Jim does next will determine who he is as a person, though nobody could blame him if he decided he actually did want to end one of Gotham’s biggest villains, thus stopping him from causing any more harm. The end of the Joker could mean that Jim Gordon gets revenge for everything Joker has done to him including the events of Batman: The Killing Joke, but it could also give the villain one last victory, allowing him to finally bring one of Gotham’s heroes to the brink of murder.
