Kojima Productions is expanding its scope, branching out from video games to music, television, and movies. This new division has been launched in Los Angeles, California, and it’s being helmed by Riley Russell.

As reported by GameIndustry.biz, Russell had a 28-year career at PlayStation where he was vice president of business affairs and chief legal officer. His new role will see him bringing Kojima Productions into a new era.

“The team has as its charter, the goal of expanding the reach and awareness of the properties now under development at Kojima Productions, and to make them, even more, a part of our popular culture,” Russell said. “Although we are a global organization, the new business development team will be centred in Los Angeles, CA. We are truly excited and looking forward to working with the very best entertainment talent we can, across all of the entertainment industries.”

Given that the goal is to expand the reach of “properties now under development at Kojima Productions,” it could be the aim is to develop adaptations or expansions of existing video game worlds. Death Stranding already has a prolific TV and film star at the helm, after all.

The news is hardly surprising considering how many stars Kojima brings into his games. Death Stranding alone features Edgar Wright, Mads Mikkelsen, Guillermo Del Toro, and Norman Reedus – those contacts might come in handy for any upcoming productions.

“Finding new ways to entertain, engage, and offer value to our fans is essential in a fast-moving, ever-changing storytelling world,” business development manager Yoshiko Fukuda added. “Our new division will take the studio into even more areas that present our creative narratives beyond video games and to open up ways for our fans to communicate and immerse themselves in these spaces.”

The division has just opened so it’s unlikely we’ll see anything anytime soon, but in the interim, you can play the recently launched Death Stranding Director’s Cut. It’s available right now on PlayStation 5, while the standard edition is on PC.
