Love Island USA gets a bad rap. Fans of the Love Island franchise tend to be vocal about their preference for the UK seasons, but that doesn’t give enough credit to the USA casts. Sure, USA islanders aren’t complaining about being mugged or pied off in their confessionals. However, what they lack in fun British slang, they make up for with big personalities quintessential to American reality television.

While some of these big personalities brought viewers the warm and fuzzies rather than the hot and rageys, others did deliver on what many fans of Love Island expect from contestants, and that’s complete and utter chaos.

10 Caroline “Caro” Viehweg (Season 1)

Love Island USA The 10 Most Chaotic Contestants

Admittedly, season 1 of Love Island USA was pretty tame compared to its UK counterparts and even the USA seasons that followed it. However, that doesn’t mean it wasn’t enjoyable. Islanders like Caro were exactly who viewers would expect to be cast on a show like Love Island because she was chaotic in all the best ways.

Caro was a chaotic neutral on a cast of primarily lawful and neutral goods. Though Caro wasn’t traditionally chaotic in the sense that she stirred the pot or started drama, she was fun, bubbly, and high energy — which is sometimes all fans can ask for from islanders.

9 James McCool (Season 2)

At first, James seemed like a regular dude. Fans enjoyed his relationship with Moira and they were a couple most viewers saw going far. But that all changed when Calvin caught Moira’s eye. James’s energy quickly became similar to Thorgy Thor’s, of RuPaul’s Drag Race fame. Only, James lacked Thorgy’s loveable charm as he quickly spiraled.

James’s solution to Moira asking for space was to cling harder, making his last few scenes on the show chaotic and cringey. It’s safe to say James McCool lost his cool and, as a result, left Love Island as simply James Mc.

8 Mackenzie Dipman (Season 2)

Love Island USA The 10 Most Chaotic Contestants

It’s a truth universally acknowledged that there has to be at least one islander per season ready and able to bring the waterworks to any situation. In season 2, Mackenzie stepped up to the plate and produced enough tears to fill up both her and Connor’s Love Island water bottles.

While Mackenzie had honest and relatable soundbites — like revealing she never feels good enough — her dramatics were, well, dramatic. Fans were undoubtedly rooting for Mackenzie but weren’t always up for riding the roller coaster that was her emotions.

7 Jalen Noble (Season 2)

Love Island USA The 10 Most Chaotic Contestants

If an islander is going to convince another islander to abandon their current couple, the least they can do is appear to be committed. Jalen, however, wasn’t really ready to go all-in with Mackenzie despite playing a major role in her dumping Connor.

As a result, Jalen came off as a player to a lot of the fans. And, on Love Island, where the goal is to find that perfect someone, playing the field can be too chaotic of a strategy, especially for islanders coming into the villa late in the game.

6 Cely Vazquez (Season 2)

Love Island USA The 10 Most Chaotic Contestants

Cely and Justine’s friendship was everything in season 2. Although Justine and Caleb were the official winners, Justine and Cely were truly the unofficial winners. While Justine is just as fun as her BFF, Cely’s energy is much more chaotic — in a good way!

Though Cely was involved in quite a bit of drama, it wasn’t her fault, choice, or reason for appearing on this list. Rather, it was her loud, high-energy antics, including waking the islanders up each and every morning, that earned Cely a place in the Love Island hall of chaos. Post-show, Cely’s viral Turtle TikTok is just the cherry on top.

5 Johnny Middlebrooks (Season 2)

The rumors that Johnny went on Love Island after proposing to his then-girlfriend at a music festival were the least of his problems in the villa. Mostly because that rumor didn’t reach Cely, unlike the Casa Amor play-by-play both the islanders and the fans mercilessly provided for her.

Johnny is a contentious Love Island figure. He brought drama to a couple that fans had in the running for winning. His wandering eyes (and lips) might have been forgiven if he had been honest. But his lies dug him into a hole he still hasn’t successfully escaped. Fans can say what they want about Johnny, but this entire debacle is the exact brand of Love Island entertainment most fans tune in for.

4 Genevieve Shawcross (Season 3)

Love Island USA The 10 Most Chaotic Contestants

When Tom’s ex-girlfriend Emma appeared on season 2 of Love Island UK, fans were expecting drama more akin to Genevieve’s entrance into the Love Island USA villa. Though Genevieve is not an ex (friend or lover) of Shannon’s, these two were like gas and flame: explosive.

Genevieve arrived in Hawaii with baggage packed full of swimsuits and every single hurtful word Shannon had ever said to her. When these two weren’t pretending to resolve their drama, they were throwing vitriol at each other fans were scrambling to decode — since most of it was rehashings of their past that the Love Island production team wasn’t interested in airing.

3 Trina Njoroge (Season 3)

Love Island USA The 10 Most Chaotic Contestants

Everything started well for Trina. She seemed to be hitting it off with Jeremy, and they even had the chance to go on a lovely first date. After that, it was all downhill. While fans were sympathetic to Trina’s situation, she did not make things easier for herself when she decided to pursue Cinco.

Trina’s attempt to kiss Cinco on the stairwell — in a spot invisible to the villa’s many cameras and while Cinco was happily coupled up with Cash — would have taken the cake as the most chaotic event of season 3 if Shannon hadn’t been there to nab first, second, and third place in the chaos category.

2 Jeremy Hershberg (Season 3)

Love Island USA The 10 Most Chaotic Contestants

Haters will say Jeremy was one player who stayed too long on Love Island, and they might be right for once. Jeremy is the textbook definition of a contestant most fans and islanders would have booted out of the villa immediately. Fool fans once (by pretending to like Trina), shame on them. Fool fans twice (Aimee), shame on Jeremy. Fool fans again and again (Florita and Bailey)!? Complete and utter chaos.

In fact, how Jeremy made it to the finale might just be the eighth wonder of the world. Fans will be discussing how he escaped a villain edit forever because his lack of commitment despite being one of the most sought-after islanders is really something.

1 Shannon St. Clair (Season 3)

Shannon entered the Hawaii villa on the defensive. She came in ready to fight any islander who so much as looked at her the wrong way. Shannon was dead set on never backing down, making for some pretty chaotic, and albeit entertaining, conversations with Josh, Genevieve, and Will.

Shannon is a gal who will never admit she’s wrong, which doesn’t make her a great person to have a conflict with. It does, however, make her a necessity on reality dating shows like Love Island. Admittedly, the villa would have been a lot more peaceful without Shannon, but where’s the fun in that?
