Grant Imahara, who was a host of Mythbusters and Netflix’s White Rabbit Project, has passed away from a brain aneurysm at 49. Imahara was born in Los Angeles on October 23, 1970, and had a love of popular culture and movies as a child. He studied electrical engineering at the University of Southern California and immediately combined his two passions in his first job after graduating. Imahara was hired by Lucasfilm as an engineer, beginning in the THX division, the company’s audio arm. He moved on to work for ILM as a robotics specialist, and has credits on a number of ILM’s movies from the late 1990s and early 2000s, including movies in the Matrix, Star Wars and Jurassic Park franchises.

Imahara then joined the long-running and enormously popular Discovery channel show Mythbusters as a host, and part of the build team. Known as the geek of the team, Imahara was responsible for all the robotics work on the show, as well as any technical computer work required for the experiments. He left the show after a decade, along with fellow build team members Kari Byron and Tory Belleci, the latter of whom he had worked with at ILM. They went on to host the Netflix show White Rabbit Project, which was similarly themed to Mythbusters, but also explored other topics. That show lasted for one season before being cancelled by the streaming giant.

Now, THR has announced that Imahara passed away on Monday due to complications caused by a brain aneurysm. The TV host was just 49 years old. Discovery released a statement saying they were “heartbroken” over his passing. His TV colleagues also posted a number of tributes on social media following the announcement, with Adam Savage calling Imahara “truly brilliant.” Byron posted a series of images focusing on their time working on Mythbusters, saying she will miss their “adventures” and that she wishes she had a time machine. Belleci said that he “cannot believe it,” adding that his “heart is broken.” You can see the tweets below.

I’m at a loss. No words. I’ve been part of two big families with Grant Imahara over the last 22 years. Grant was a truly brilliant engineer, artist and performer, but also just such a generous, easygoing, and gentle PERSON. Working with Grant was so much fun. I’ll miss my friend.

Imahara is the second host of Mythbusters to pass away in the past year, following the death of co-host Jessi Combs, who appeared on the show in 2009 while Byron was on maternity leave. Combs passed away in a car crash while trying to set a North American land speed record.

Imahara’s inquiring mind, genial nature and love of geeky topics made him a popular host on the show, and he was a regular guest on robotics, science and geek podcasts and TV shows following his departure from Mythbusters. He also recently made headlines for creating a life-like Baby Yoda animatronic. He will be missed for his enthusiastic approach to hosting, and his infectious love for science and robotics.
