Nintendo has announced that Super Mario 3D All-Stars is coming soon to the Nintendo Switch, but it will only be on sale for a limited time, which makes no sense. The announcement puts months of rumors to rest by bundling some of the best games in the series, featuring updated versions of Super Mario 64, Super Mario Sunshine, and Super Mario Galaxy in one package.

As of September 18, you have the option of purchasing the bundle in one of two ways, either digitally through the Nintendo eShop or by snagging a physical version that will release in limited quantities. For some reason, the bundle will be removed from the Nintendo eShop at the end of March, and presumably physical versions will no longer be produced either.

This limited window to purchase the bundle makes little sense. Is Nintendo taking a page from Disney’s playbook to create an artificial feeling of scarcity? For years, Disney would take a classic film out of their “vault” and make it available for purchase, and before streaming services were common, the tactic worked wonders for sales.

Now however, in our digital age of having every Nintendo Switch game available on the eShop, a limited-time release for what is bound to be a popular game bundle is anachronic and needs to be kept in the past. This could simply be Nintendo testing the waters to evaluate how well a game sells in a limited window of time, and then again in a later window once brought back (because it certainly will), compared to making the game available on the eShop all the time.

It looks like we are all lab rats in Nintendo’s experiment, but that is nothing new.

Super Mario 3D All-Stars was not the only game announced with a limited availability. Super Mario Bros. 35 will also share the same end date of March 31, though it feels completely different in that case. Nintendo often adds new, wacky modes for a limited time with their Nintendo Switch Online service, and like special events in Tetris 99, the new Super Mario Bros. 35 is probably going to return often as part of a rotation throughout the year.

If you are on the fence about buying Super Mario 3D All-Stars, the best idea would be to set a calendar reminder for mid-March, else you could miss out for some time until Nintendo decides to make the bundle available again.
