The resident delinquent troublemaker of Shujin Academy, Ryuji Sakamoto quickly becomes Joker’s first friend and member of the Phantom Thieves. Though he has a tendency to be a bit hot-headed, he cares deeply for his friends and righting the injustices found in society. Here’s a spoiler-free guide on how to max out his Confidant in Persona 5 Royal.

Availability

Upon your arrival at Shujin Academy (and your unexpected discovery of the game’s first palace), Ryuji will awaken to his persona on 4/12 and his Confidant will immediately start.

Ryuji can be found in one of two places – either in the school hallway (outside of your classroom by the stairs) or at the arcade in Shibuya on days off.

He is available after school Monday through Friday during the day. On rainy days, he can also be found at night in the Shibuya arcade. Note that there are several rank-up events that cannot happen on rainy days.

Perks

• Rank 2 || Punk Talk: Chance to step in after Shadow negotiation fails, allowing a retry.
• Rank 3 || Follow Up: Chance to perform a follow-up attack if Joker’s attack does not down the enemy.
• Rank 4 || Stealth Dash: Makes it harder for the enemy to notice while sprinting.
• Rank 6 || Harisen Recovery: Chance to cure status ailments inflicted upon party members.
• Rank 7 || Insta-Kill: Chance to instantly win a battle after making contact with the enemy by dashing. Experience, money, and persona are gained after winning the battle.
• Rank 8 || Endure: Chance to withstand an otherwise fatal attack with 1 HP remaining.
• Rank 9 || Protect: Chance to shield Joker from an otherwise fatal attack.
• Rank 10 || Second Awakening: Transforms his persona, Captian Kidd, into a mythological trickster, Seiten Taisei.

Rank Up Events

As with every confidant, having a persona of a corresponding arcana will increase the number of points you earn with them by one. The point increases with a Chariot persona on hand are indicated in brackets next to the regular increases as such:

Prompt 1) point values for answers a, b, c [point values with matching persona]

In addition, Ryuji is one of the confidants where scoring high on exams will also provide a bonus. Ranking first in the entire school will give you 1.5x affinity points, while ranking within the top ten will give 1.2x. This stacks with the bonuses from having a matching persona. If you’re receiving bonus points on top of 3 points already, you will still see only three musical notes but gain more within the actual mechanics.

Occasionally, Ryuji will text Joker to hang out with him somewhere. While these hangouts will not increase your rank, you will still receive affinity points. Replying to Ryuji’s messages immediately will incur a 1.2x increase in affinity points. All the same parameters for bonuses apply to non-rank hangouts as well.

8/3 – Watching a DVD at Leblanc (Daytime)

Note that if you want to participate in this event, you’ll need to have purchased the “CRT Television” from the Secondhand Shop in Yongen-Jaya and have set it up in your attic room. If not, Ryuji will not come over.
