A new incentive by Pokémon GO will now give players special in-game rewards if they invite friends to play the game. The augmented reality mobile game, which launched in 2016, allows players to explore their real-world surroundings in order to find, battle, and catch Pokémon. Pokémon GO found massive popularity upon release, largely due to promoting physical health and wellness, though it did experience some criticism due to technical issues and contributing to vehicular accidents.
Despite releasing nearly five years ago, Pokémon GO continues to receive post-launch support from its developers. Pokémon GO’s second season, dubbed the Season of Legends, began on March 1 and added a host of new content to the game. The aptly-named season focuses on legendary Pokémon and therefore saw the inclusion of such powerful creatures as Tornadus, Thundurus, and Landorus from the fifth generation of the franchise. Other notable features, such as mega raids and Pokémon hatching, were also added. Support for Pokémon GO, including shadowy legendary Pokémon and community events, is expected to continue throughout 2021 in honor of the title’s five-year anniversary.
Pokémon GO has just announced a new referral system that will allow players to share special in-game rewards by referring others to play the game. This referral can be used to invite a friend to play Pokémon GO for the first time or to simply return to the game after a long break. Rewards for referral, which are shared between the two players, include Rare Candy and special Pokémon encounters. The referral process will be conducted using special codes which will be distributed to Pokémon GO players, beginning with select players in Australia.

Pokémon GO has been extremely popular for five years now, and the AR title shows no signs of slowing down now. Developer Niantic recently partnered with Microsoft to make Pokémon GO compatible with the HoloLens virtual reality headset, bringing the game’s immersive quality to a whole new level. This new VR Pokémon GO appeared in a demonstration by Microsoft, and while it is still in the early stages of development it does foreshadow a truly immersive Pokémon experience for the future. Outside of virtual reality, Pokémon GO will also be crossing over with the Pokémon Trading Card Game, as the game’s Professor Willow will be receiving his very own trading card.
Pokémon GO is marketed as a way for gamers to experience the joy of Pokémon while also getting outside to exercise and enjoy nature. Like any activity, the hunt for wild Pokémon is better experienced with a companion, and the game’s new referral system will now offer rewards for group activity. While the referral system is doubtlessly also meant to boost player numbers of Pokémon GO, the ability to socially connect players is extremely valuable.
