Director David Ayer releases an image of Jared Leto as the Joker in Suicide Squad following the newest trailer for Morbius. Leto plays the titular character in the Spider-Man universe movie from Sony. The film is set to release on January 28, 2022. Despite the anticipation for Morbius, some are still thinking about Leto’s last turn as an iconic comic book character.

After debuting the DC Extended Universe with a couple of hero-focused movies, Warner Bros. followed up Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice with a blockbuster that centered on villains through Suicide Squad. Released in 2016, the ensemble project introduced a group of villains forced to do good or risk getting killed. While not a part of the Task Force X gang, there was a lot of anticipation for Leto’s debut as the DCEU’s version of the Joker. Marketing for the film made it look like he was a big part of the narrative, but in the end, his involvement only amounted to a glorified cameo. This disappointed those who were looking forward to seeing Leto’s take on the Joker. That included Suicide Squad’s own director, who continues to claim the actor did a great job portraying the Clown Prince of Crime.

More than five years later, Ayer is still bummed audiences weren’t able to see more of how good Leto was as Joker. Soon after the release of the new Morbius trailer, the filmmaker took to his official Twitter account to share another never-before-seen image of Leto as the Batman villain, with the caption “Jared killed it But no one knows.” Check out the photo below:

Ayer has been vocal about how Warner Bros.’ meddling led to a lot of changes in Suicide Squad. The mixed response to Batman v Superman had a ripple effect throughout succeeding DCEU films. For Suicide Squad, which directly followed it, that meant going through rushed reshoots that drastically changed its story. Apparently, the studio wanted a more lighthearted and humorous film following the success of Deadpool in early 2016. This resulted in much of Leto’s performance as Joker getting snipped out of the theatrical cut. Aside from decreasing Joker’s involvement in the film, there were other story alterations that were executed. That includes Harley Quinn (Margot Robbie) and Enchantress’ (Cara Delevingne) arcs going through various levels of adjustments.

Leto recently reprised his DCEU role in Zack Snyder’s Justice League, although it’s worth noting the HBO film is not considered canon. Beyond that, no word yet if there’s still a chance for the actor to play the role of Joker again. While fan campaigns continue regarding the release of the Ayer Cut of Suicide Squad, there hasn’t been any indication this is something Warner Bros. is even contemplating. As for Leto, he’s likely focused on his new Marvel role as Michael Morbius in Morbius.
