This past weekend, the organizers of the Game Developers Conference made the tough decision to postpone plans for the show until later in the year. With growing concerns over the spread of the coronavirus, the planners felt it was necessary to delay the show to ensure the safety of everyone involved.

Despite these concerns, the ESA is moving forward with plans for E3 2020. In a statement given to Vice, the ESA said, “Everyone is watching the situation very closely. We will continue to be vigilant, as our first priority is the health, wellness, and safety of all of our exhibitors and attendees. Given what we know at this time, we are moving ahead full speed with E3 2020 planning. Exhibit and registration sales are on track for an exciting show in June.”

PAX East went off without a hitch this past weekend, but some recent deaths from the coronavirus in the US have given people reason to be cautious. With authorities not quite sure what is causing such a massive spread, it would stand to reason that large gatherings of people shouldn’t be happening. Everyone deserves to have fun, but we also shouldn’t be taking unnecessary risks when it comes to diseases.

Ultimately, the ESA won’t be the one that determines whether or not E3 continues. If enough publishers and developers pull out of the show, there won’t even be an E3. This is what happened with GDC. Some key companies had left, but it wasn’t until Microsoft, Epic, and Facebook all backed out on the same day that the show was basically finished.

It’s not hard to see why the ESA is so poised to keep E3 going. In these trying times, having an event to rally around and inspire hope can help people get through tough situations. Still, we’re talking about an airborne disease that can spread with little symptoms. One should exercise caution so as to not wind up sick.

Whatever happens from now until June, the ESA isn’t ready to throw in the towel. If you still have plans to attend, you can rest easy knowing your money hasn’t been wasted…yet.
