Warning: SPOILERS ahead for The Umbrella Academy season 2.

Number Five showcases why the Temps Commission refers to him as the perfect assassin in The Umbrella Academy season 2, but only the comic answers what makes him so talented. In episode 6, “A Light Supper,” the Handler offers him a proposition: kill the entire board of the Commission and receive a briefcase back to their original timeline. While she could have asked anyone else, the Handler requested Number Five because he is, without a doubt, the perfect assassin.

Episode 7, “Öga for Öga,” opens on Number five completely obliterating the entirety of the Temps Commission board with ease. While his powers surely make him an ideal weapon against any individual, it is actually what occurred within Gerard Way’s original construction of the character that makes him so perfect. While The Umbrella Academy season 2 does not explain the reason Number Five became so talented in the business of killing, the comics do. In The Umbrella Academy: Dallas issue 3, “Television” or “Are You There God? It’s Me, Klaus,” it is revealed that he was trained by the Commission and his talents have little to nothing to do with his time traveling capabilities.

It is indisputable that Number Five is a masterful assassin and talented fighter. This is proven throughout the entirety of the series. Considering the fact that Number Five is a middle-aged man in a pre-pubescent body, his ability to take down hoards of adults necessitates an explanation that only the comics have provided. Here is what makes him the perfect assassin.

The Temps Commission Created The Ultimate Weapon

The Umbrella Academy: Dallas issue 3 reveals that, when attempting to return home to his family in the present day, he was stopped by the Commission who then put him to work. They performed surgery on Number Five that halted the aging process, and trained him in the art of jumping through brief moments in time. Most importantly, they fused his DNA with the world’s most notable assassins. Therefore, Number Five holds every talent that history’s best killers for hire possessed in one contained body. The DNA of Mark David Chapman who shot John Lennon, Luigi Lucheni killer of Empress Elisabeth, and Gavrilo Princip assassin of Archduke Franz Ferdinand runs through his veins.

Most, if not all, of these killers have taken down some of the highest people in power with ease. Similarly, Number Five in season 2, episode 7, “Öga for Öga” took down the entire board of the Commission. His surgery is revealed briefly in issue 3. The fact that it is nonexistent in the series leaves a plot hole in his specific history. While all of the Hargreeves children are naturally gifted with powers that can kill, Number Five’s power is solely based on time travel. This does not give him the strength that is required to take down entire legions and kill John F. Kennedy; therefore, his history with the Commision (and DNA composition) will likely be explained in the series at some point.

Without this integral piece of information pertaining to Number Five’s DNA, The Umbrella Academy misses the opportunity to expand on his origins and the exact details of what happened when he joined the Commission. At this moment, the series has not been renewed for season 3. If The Umbrella Academy receives the green light on furthering the story of the Hargreeves children, it would be the opportune moment to expand on Number Five’s origins and talents as the perfect assassin.
