Warning! Spoilers ahead for Venom #28

It’s a dark, dark, future that Eddie Brock and Venom have found themselves in. Thanks to a malfunctioning chronal gateway, Venom and his son Dylan were sucked into an alternate dimension set in the future, along with a new Venom villain known as Virus. In this new world, symbiotes have taken over the entire planet, and nearly every person has been bonded with their own symbiote under the rule of the symbiote king Codex. However, a few remain to fight the good fight with their own anti-symbiote armor, resisting Codex’s subjugation. In Venom #28, Eddie gets to meet the resistance, seeing a lot of familiar faces.

In this world, Eddie Brock killed himself in the church where he would have met his other, Venom. Instead, Venom bonded with Anne Weying in on Earth, Eddie’s grieving girlfriend at the time. Over time, the war with Codex and his symbiote hive-mind began, and Anne took up the fight against him under the leadership of President Eugene Thompson (the original Agent Venom on Eddie’s Earth). After the president’s death in the war, Anne stepped in to lead what remained of the resistance movement, running her own squad of heroes, with all them equipped with their own symbiote armor to fight Codex’s forces.

While the collection of heroes are all familiar to readers and to Eddie, they’ve never looked they way they do now in Venom #28 from writer Donny Cates with art by Juan Gedeon. Likewise, they’ve also never assembled together as a unit before. After Anne explains what’s happened and the war, she’s introduces Venom and Dylan to her team.

Right off the bat, there’s a mustachioed Peter Parker, which in and off itself is pretty funny, as that seems to be the only noticeable change to his character. Next there’s Cletus Kasady. While Eddie and readers know him as the serial killer, lunatic, symbiote villain Carnage, on this Earth he’s merely a loyal soldier (albeit with a troubled past). There’s also Deadpool, who just looks happy to be there. Finally, there’s Andi Benton, who in the standard earth is the host for the symbiote known as Scream. All in all, it’s quite the unusual but motley crew.

The introductions don’t last long however, as a team of Codex own symbiote-bonded heroes arrive to take them all out, featuring symbiote versions of Wolverine, the Thing, and Juggernaut among others. Thankfully, Deadpool came prepared, wearing a vest full of explosives that he sets off to give his squad time to escape. Blowing the tunnels behind them, the squad makes it to their base, where Venom meets a their version of Reed Richards, who seems quite crazy. However, he does reveal that Codex is none other than the grown up version of Eddie’s own son Dylan, which certainly complicates things. Will Venom be able to join the resistance if it means fighting his own son? Fans will find out soon with the next issue from Donny Cates.
