What A Zelda BOTW Multiplayer Mod Could Look Like

When it released in 2017, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild was an instant hit, and has enjoyed tremendous longevity thanks to the speed running and modding communities, but a multiplayer mod for the open world adventure game has yet to be developed. The idea of playing with a friend is a common “what if” for open world games, especially ones that are already subject to lots of modding like Skyrim and Fallout 4. The physics playground that is Breath of the Wild already lets player get into all sorts of whacky antics, but running around Hyrule with a few friends could be even more fun.

Turning a single player game into a multiplayer experience is tremendously difficult, and Breath of the Wild’s design brings up all sorts of potential issues. What happens when one player enters an Ancient Shrine, or starts a cutscene? Does the bullet time while using a bow in mid-air effect all players? Will BOTW need more enemies to make combat fair, and can the game handle more models on screen? Can the terrain and textures load properly if players go to opposite sides of the map? BOTW was entirely designed for a single player, and there’s no telling how the game will react once a few more are set loose.

A multiplayer mod hasn’t been created for BOTW out of a lack of interest – in fact, YouTuber and Twitch streamer PointCrow has recently offered $10,000 to any mod developer that can make it happen. That’s a respectably sized bounty, but the mod will no doubt take some time, if it’s even possible. PointCrow’s stipulations outline a rather thorough vision for a BOTW multiplayer mod, with not only requirements for claiming the bounty, but also an idea of how the mod should function as a game.

Possible Multiplayer Features For Breath Of The Wild

Just one additional player would technically fit the definition of multiplayer, but PointCrow envisions four players in a single game, which could make BOTW feel like one of Zelda’s underrated multiplayer games. PointCrow’s idea for the mod also requires a persistent game world between players, no limitations on traversal, and separate inventories for each player. In essence, the idea is to let four people play BOTW how they normally would, except with three other Links running around. That alone is an enticing prospect, but if it turns out to be possible, BOTW multiplayer could be taken even further.

Working together to defeat Calamity Ganon is all well and good, but Hyrule Field already has the ruins of a coliseum that could make for a perfect PvP arena. Some BOTW players can already pull of wildly unnecessary combos and trick shots to kill BOTW enemies, so an instanced PvP arena could lead to some hilariously impressive outcomes, and allow players to take their skills to another level, harnessing their years of creative play toward a brand-new gameplay goal.

There are plenty of other potential competitive opportunities too, like a scoring system for the snowball bowling in the Hebra Mountains, races to complete Shrines, or SSX-style shield surfing competitions. These are all a step beyond the basic requirements of a not-so-simple multiplayer mod, and even bonus content for co-op, like drivable/ridable wagons, would be major undertakings. PointCrow is hoping to have a Breath of the Wild multiplayer mod finished at least two months before the sequel comes out, so with any luck, a gaggle of Links will be running around Hyrule in the next year. If any mod-makers who undertake the project find ways to implement some of these other ideas beyond just the core gameplay, such a mod could practically feel like a sequel in itself.
