It was a hit from the start — with the pilot episode winning the Emmy for both Outstanding Directing and Writing. The characters in this show are a realistic portrayal of a suburban family, albeit with a few exaggerations for comedic effect.

While each role can, in essence, be distilled down to a single characteristic (Reese’s blood lust or Ida’s malevolence), they also manifest various other traits given the situation. Therefore, the most important characters that appear in the series have been matched with the Zodiac sign that best describes their personalities.

12 Dewey Wilkerson – Aries

Dewey is the baby of the family, but he receives almost no attention; in fact, he claims that his brothers have bullied from the day he was born. However, he is still the toughest of the lot (unlike Malcolm who can’t stop complaining about his life) which makes him an Aries.

Dewey shows a sense of responsibility and leadership not present in any of the other Wilkerson boys — he has been able to take care of himself since he was a toddler. In one episode, he hitches several rides with different people but finds his way back home at the end without anyone realizing that he was missing.

11 Lois Wilkerson – Taurus

Lois is a classic Taurus — she displays high levels of intellect, diligence as well as ambition (although this is largely directed towards her children since she never had a chance to succeed in life). As she runs her household with an iron fist, it can be tough for her to accept her own mistakes, given her complete confidence in her abilities.

Lois loves Hal a lot, and though their relationship is fraught with eternal mishaps involving the boys, she somehow manages to find time to cuddle up with her husband or (on rare occasions) have a date night.

Francis’ positivity only emerges when he is away from his family, considering that he is one of Otto’s best managers at the ranch. 7 Stevie Kenarban – Virgo

As a Virgo, Steve is a kind person, often putting the opinions or feelings of others in front of his own. He shows an unfaltering devotion to Malcolm — supporting his friend through the worst of times (even if Malcolm is the one responsible for his own predicament).

Stevie can be shy as well, which is probably due to his complete lack of a social life as his parents keep him under lock and key because they are terrified that he might get hurt. Stevie is clearly as smart as Malcolm but prefers not to boast about it, nor spend his time insulting people less intelligent than himself.

6 Jamie Wilkerson – Libra

Jamie is a later introduction to the Wilkersons, only coming into the picture from the fifth season. He is classified as a Libra because of his incomprehensible genius for his age (something in those Wilkerson genes).

While he is not bullied as much by his brothers, Jamie regularly manipulates them, mainly because he understands exactly what to do to prevent Lois from finding out about his antics. His Libra nature does, in some cases, break his facade of innocence — mostly due to his inability to comprehend the far-reaching consequences of his actions.

5 Grandma Ida – Scorpio

Grandma Ida is the strongest personality in the show — a true Scorpio — bursting with energy and ferocity even at her advanced age. She intimidates the entire family, Lois included (and often terrifies complete strangers into submission).

Ida refuses to be vulnerable in front of Lois, which is shown when she refuses to reveal that she had a big fight with her older daughter, Susan. As a Scorpio, Ida never backs down from a fight, nor is she reluctant to venture into controversial territories — like her open racism against Piama, Francis’ Native Alaskan wife.

4 Hal Wilkerson – Sagittarius

Hal is a generous man (at least most of the time), who loves his family dearly even though they drive him up the wall. In accordance with the Sagittarius sign, Hal loves exploring the complicated depths of his own mind — whether it’s creating an artistic masterpiece, or building elaborate systems of engineering and robotics (which may not always work).

Hal’s relationship with Lois remains incandescent after several years and raising literal Gremlins, but he seems to take a lot more effort than Lois; to be fair, Lois spends almost all her time at home trying to control her boys.

3 Lionel Herkabe – Capricorn

Lionel Herkabe is Malcolm’s gifted class teacher, being a genius himself. Being a Capricorn, he is highly focused on what he wants, which is mostly making the lives of pre-teens a living hell.

Herkabe loves following rules, as seen when he establishes a hierarchy of intelligence in the classroom by grading each student’s performance to make them compete against each other. He displays an inordinate amount of arrogance, given his position as a school-teacher, being more concerned about how his life appears to others than enjoying it as it is.

2 Craig Feldspar – Aquarius

Craig is Lois’ creepy colleague, whose persistent overtures towards her are constantly turned down. He is a classic Aquarius, however, because he does offer to help out both Lois and Hal (whom he hates) when they need someone to babysit the boys.

Craig has, in several instances, shown that he actually does care about the Wilkerson boys. A prime example is when he takes part in several of their rowdy pranks, and even allows them access to his computer.

1 Piama Tananahaakna – Pisces

Piama is a fiery character who never concedes a fight, be it with Francis’ abusive employer whose parakeet Piama kidnaps to force her to treat Francis better, or Grandma Ida, whose prejudice has zero effect on Piama.

Piama is classified as a Pisces because she is the only one who is sensitive enough to handle Francis, especially when he goes on a tirade about his mother. Piama has strong stances that she almost never budges from, like having a child with Francis (although she changes her mind later after growing numb to the utter chaos in the Wilkerson home).
