Ralph Breaks the Internet is projected to top Creed II at the box office this Thanksgiving weekend, but both should top the debuts of their respective predecessors. The holiday season is typically a busy time of year at the multiplex, and 2018 is no exception. Just days after a trio of newcomers premiere in wide release (led by Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald), several more fresh arrivals open, hoping to make a splash over the Thanksgiving break. There’s bound to be something for everyone, so ideally all the films playing will be able to appeal to their target audience.

Undoubtedly, two of the most anticipated releases this month are the aforementioned Ralph Breaks the Internet and Creed II. The former is the long-awaited sequel to 2012’s Wreck-it Ralph, while the latter is the followup to 2015’s well-received Rocky franchise spinoff, Creed. Theaters will be quite crowded with tentpoles and awards contenders vying for attention, but this duo has always looked to lead the pack. Based on the latest estimates, that’s exactly how things will turn out.

Per Deadline, Ralph Breaks the Internet is expected to earn approximately $65 million over the extended Wednesday-Sunday frame, while Creed II should earn $48 million. These figures would exceed the five-day totals of the first movies in these series. Back in 2012, Ralph Breaks the Internet (which opened in early November, not over Thanksgiving) grossed $56.7 million in its first five days. Creed brought in $42.1 million during Thanksgiving 2015.

It’s not surprising this is the case. In regards to Ralph, the Disney marketing machine has been building hype for the past few months with a promotional campaign spotlighting the film’s fun premise and Disney references. Illumination’s The Grinch (which opens on November 9) will be targeting a similar demographic, which could negatively impact Ralph’s performance. That said, enough time separates the two, and families will be looking forward to seeing an entertaining animated movie while kids are on school break. Creed revitalized mainstream interest in the Rocky property, and the sequel once again looks to blend nostalgia with the new. Creed II sees Adonis Johnson do battle against Viktor Drago, son of Rocky IV villain Ivan Drago. Fans of the franchise are excited to see the generational bout on the big screen, and the trailers hint at another grounded, emotional sports drama.

With these two movies dominating the charts, the rest of the films will be left scrapping for what they can. The latest cinematic version of Robin Hood is poised to make $17 million over the holiday, and Universal’s Oscar contender Green Book will be there as a feel-good counter-programming option for older moviegoers. Of course, this doesn’t even consider the holdovers. Fantastic Beasts should have an opening weekend between $65-75 million, while crime thriller Widows and comedy Instant Family hang around. There’s only so much money to go around, so some of these movies are might end up being disappointed with their totals. It’ll be interesting to see what happens.
