Ryohei Kimura’s sharp and brash delivery is easily recognizable no matter what media he is heard in. Outside of anime, he is known for voicing Joshua in The World Ends With You and its 2021 sequel.

His characters are outspoken and confident, often delighting in the thrill of battle or competition, and tend to be fan favorites. Some of his biggest anime voice roles include Ryouta Kise in Kuroko’s Basketball and Koutarou Bokuto in Haikyuu!! Whether they are main characters or supporting roles, Kimura’s performances make them instantly memorable.

Judal (Magi: Labyrinth of Magic)

The purpose of the three Magi is to select king candidates that will control the world. In theory, they are meant as a force for good, but Judal is proof that the power of a Magi can be destructive as well. Kimura’s performance perfectly shows how Judal revels in the disasters he causes with his magic.

As a newborn, Judal was kidnapped and his family murdered by the cult al-Thamen, who sought to use his power to create chaos in the world. Life as their child soldier turned Judal cruel and sadistic. Even when he turns on them after discovering how they took possession of him, his desire to destroy the world doesn’t fade. He simply switches allegiance to Hakuryuu, who also had his life ruined by al-Thamen and wants to take revenge on the world for what was done to him.

Hideki Hinata (Angel Beats!)

When he was alive, Hinata’s entire life revolved around baseball. During a major tournament, he dropped a fly ball and lost the game for his team, and never forgave himself for letting them down, even after his death in a traffic accident. Regrets like this are what make Angel Beats! one of the saddest isekai anime.

In the afterlife, he almost moves on in the episode “Day Game” by catching the ball he missed in life but is stopped by Yui. Hinata ends up being essential to Yui’s successful passing: his promise to find and marry her in their next lives is the final thing that allows her to move on. Filled with renewed purpose, Hinata promises to help everyone else in the afterlife move on before he goes himself.

Yuugo Hachiken (Silver Spoon)

Hachiken is smart and capable but severely burnt out. He enrolls in Ooezo Agricultural High School expecting an easy ride, but he soon discovers that there’s a lot more to a career in farming than he thought. Learning from the classmates he admires, he not only finds out about the world of agriculture but discovers a sense of purpose in his own life.

Kimura’s voice is well suited to both Hachiken’s dry humor and his more overblown reactions to the things that shock him about farm life. He also nails more emotional scenes such as in the episode “Hachiken Says Goodbye to Pork Bowl,” when Hachiken accepts that the piglet he raised is going to be sent to slaughter, and declares his intentions to buy the meat he will be processed into.

Ryouta Kise (Kuroko’s Basketball)

Energetic and easygoing Kise is a member of the Generation of Miracles, five (technically six, counting Kuroko) basketball players with unbeatable talents. Kise’s specialty is Perfect Copy, which allows him to copy the specialties of any other player he sees, effectively beating them at their own game. He can only keep up the ability for a few minutes per game, so he has to use it wisely.

One of the strongest players in Kuroko’s Basketball, Kise mastered every sport so effortlessly that they all became boring to him until discovering that basketball could actually challenge him. Whether he’s with the rest of the Generation of Miracles or his new team at Kaijo High School, his teammates are constantly driving him to improve.

Akira Takizawa (Eden of the East)

“Akira Takizawa” is technically not his real name. However, it’s all he has to go on, awakening in front of the White House in Washington D.C. stark naked, amnesiac, and carrying a cell phone containing 8.2 billion yen (about 72 million USD), which a mysterious caller tells him he is meant to use to save Japan.

Takizawa commits to this goal easily, being an idealistic soul. Though his lack of memories means that he requires help from others (particularly Saki, the show’s deuteragonist), he is quick and clever enough to finesse his way through various plans. He draws on his love of movies to figure out how to act in the political thriller he finds himself living.

Kouhei Imamura (Grand Blue)

Grand Blue centers around a college diving team that is more interested in partying and drunken antics than serious competition. Kouhei fits in perfectly with the raunchy, fun-loving group: a self-proclaimed otaku, the great loves of his life are all two-dimensional women.

Because of his obsession with anime and manga, he doesn’t get along very well with other people, having impossible standards for potential real-life partners. However, he is quick to gush over the media he loves, such as in the episode “Shopping” where he is overjoyed to find wetsuits based on Asuka and Rei’s plugsuits from Neon Genesis Evangelion.

Charles Grey (Black Butler)

Ciel Phantomhive is far from the only nobleman who is staunchly loyal to Queen Victoria. Earl Charles Grey is one of her personal butlers, and he takes great pleasure in carrying out the duties assigned to him, however messy they may be. Namely, he is a swordsman without peer and enjoys toying with weaker opponents.

He is also intelligent and manipulative, as seen in the Phantomhive Manor Murders Arc. Grey was ordered by Queen Victoria to murder a visiting German public figure and frame Ciel. While the plan went awry, forcing Grey to kill others as well, he successfully pins the murders on another man and gets away clean. The only reason Ciel finds out the truth is because one of Grey’s victims was Sebastian, who, being a demon, could not be killed by a simple sword wound.

Lawless (Servamp)

Also going by the name of Hyde, Lawless is one of the seven Servamps, a type of vampire who can form a blood contract with a human (known as the vampire’s “Eve”) and be bound to serve that human. Embodying the sin of Greed, he is extremely self-absorbed and tends to go through Eves very quickly, killing them once they begin to bore him.

Careless and cynical as he is, Lawless is capable of caring for others. His current attitude stems from the loss of his favorite Eve, Ophelia, centuries prior, when she died in an attempt to broker peace between her kingdom and another. His current Eve, Licht, understands him better than most and is able to help him come to terms with his past trauma.

Koutarou Bokuto (Haikyuu!!)

Though his grades are some of the worst in Haikyuu!!, Bokuto has intelligence to spare on the volleyball court. He is the captain and wing spiker of Fukurodani Academy’s team, and one of the top five aces in Japan. (Just don’t remind him that he didn’t make the top three.)

He believes in living in the moment, and always gives 120% against whatever opponent he’s facing. His lively personality and powerfully positive outlook motivate his teammates to work hard, and he even happily offers help to younger players from opposing teams, such as Hinata and Tsukishima of Karasuno High School. Kimura conveys his energy and passion so well that audiences are hyped up just listening to him.

Hirotaka Wakamatsu (Monthly Girls’ Nozaki-kun)

Gentle and sensitive Wakamatsu is an outlier among Kimura’s usually loud and bold characters. He is Nozaki’s friend and assistant, responsible for the erasing and later tone work of Nozaki’s manga, making him an essential part of one of the best anime about making anime and manga.

Much of the humor involving him stems from his love life or lack thereof. He reads shoujo romances as if they’re instruction manuals, and fails miserably when he tries to apply their cliches to dealing with girls in real life. He adores “Lorelei,” the mysterious beautiful voice he hears from the Choir Club but is unaware that her true identity is Yuzuki Seo, the aggressive classmate who regularly picks on him.
