Over the course of Avatar: The Last Airbender, Team Avatar journeys throughout the Four nations, often getting into situations that require disguises or changing clothes to reflect a significant event or character arc. Their travels take them to see various places and people, experiencing different cultures and fashion styles–from the rigid military uniforms of the Fire Nation to the opulent formal-wear of the Ba Sing Se aristocracy.

The fashion of the Avatar world is incredibly well-developed, giving viewers plenty of interesting designs and outfits over the course of the three Books. However, in the years since the show’s ending, some looks have stuck out as particularly memorable.

10 Invasion Toph

During the battle on the Day of Black Sun in Book 3, Toph wears an outfit similar to her original back in Book 2, but with some important variations. Facing the Fire Nation after their takeover of the Earth Kingdom, Toph fights alongside fellow Earth benders wearing pieces of the Earth Kingdom soldier’s uniform.

These additions symbolize how Toph is acting as both a member of Team Avatar and as a proud citizen of the Earth Kingdom, standing with her people against the nation that conquered her home. With her arc frequently addressing Toph’s feelings of alienation and her trouble working with others, this declaration of unity shows how much she’s grown.

9 Coronation Zuko

The end of Avatar sees Zuko take his place as the next Fire Lord, approaching his coronation with Aang at his side to announce the end of the war and the dawn of a new era of peace before getting crowned. Since the beginning, the audience has watched Zuko struggle as he’s torn between his devotion to his heritage, his family’s manipulation, and his morality, resulting in a turbulent and emotional character arc.

Given all he’s been through, it’s incredibly satisfying to see him free of the expectations and control of his family as he takes the throne, wearing the same traditional Fire Lord robes as his father while announcing an entirely new future for his nation. The outfit is slightly too big, signifying the long road of leadership Zuko has ahead of him.

8 Upper Ring Disguises

One of the prettiest costumes in Avatar, the Upper Ring-style dresses Toph and Katara wear in Book 2 stand out especially for how different they are from their usual style. The ornate and elegant fashion of the Ba Sing Se Upper Ring highlights the design team’s work to create unique and comprehensive aesthetics for not only each Nation, but also the various regional cultures and classes within them.

The fact that they are disguises rather than outfits they are forced to wear is also significant, especially considering Toph’s years of discomfort in overly feminine formal wear. The dress Toph chooses in this scene is very different from the hanfu her parents make her wear, and seeing her have fun pretending to be an aristocrat with Katara is a great character moment.

7 Finale Aang

Along with Zuko, Aang appears in the final scene wearing an outfit symbolizing his growth and presence as a leader. While Zuko is given an official title and a crown, the significance of Aang’s outfit is not obviously stated. Aang’s ceremonial clothing closely resembles what the Senior Monks of the Air Nomads are shown to wear, a visual embrace of the maturity and leadership he’s struggled with in the past.

The most significant aspect of Aang’s new costume is the necklace, which closely resembles the one Monk Gyatso wore. At the end of his tumultuous journey and with the future stretching ahead of him, Aang’s touching references to his beloved first teacher and his original people serve as an emotional final image for the series.

6 Book 3 Azula

Azula starts Book 3 with a noticeable upgrade to her original Fire Nation outfit. While the overall silhouette is pretty similar, her new uniform has been reworked with golden accents, a stark color scheme, and sharper lines. The changes to Azula’s outfit clearly take influence from her father’s clothes, reworking many parts of the traditional Fire Lord regalia into her typical uniform. Most obviously, her collar is recolored to resemble Ozai’s and her old wrap exchanged for an overskirt shaped like his ornamental belt.

Her costume change signified Azula’s hunger for her inheritance, physically representing her vicious ambition as she does everything possible to get her closer to the crown. As if Azula’s merciless cunning and terrifyingly powerful bending wasn’t enough to scare people off, her new outfit’s commanding appearance made her somehow even more intimidating.

5 Invasion Sokka

One of Sokka’s earliest scenes in Avatar shows him putting on the traditional warpaint and uniform of a Southern Water Tribe warrior, trying his best to protect his home against the Fire Nation without any of the adult warriors to help. But Sokka is only a child leading children and, despite his best effort, he’s unable to stand up against the force of an army.

When he once again dons the uniform of a Southern Water Tribe Warrior it is as an extremely qualified fighter and master strategist, standing side by side with his father and friends to execute an invasion plan of his own making. Wearing the wolf’s head helmet symbolizes more than his place as a warrior, it is in many ways the culmination of Sokka’s character arc–showing his growth into a fully-fledged and accomplished leader.

4 Blue Spirit

“The Blue Spirit” is a fan favorite Avatar episode, and the all-black clothes, twin blades, and signature blue oni mask of Zuko’s disguise is undeniably cool. While acting as the Blue Spirit, Zuko is free to act outside of the constraints and expectations of his identity, giving him a kind of confidence he lacks as the Exiled Prince. The anonymity also offers him an opportunity to lean into the good in him, paving the way for his eventual redemption.

As the Blue Spirit, Zuko gets to show off his impressive bladework and stealth skills, proving him to be incredibly competent even besides his talented fire bending. Enigmatic and intimidating, the Blue Spirit’s bright mask sneaking through the dark is an unforgettable image that has solidified it as Zuko’s most iconic outfit.

3 Painted Lady

The Painted Lady is an urban legend belonging to a Fire Nation village being slowly destroyed by a nearby factory, whose waste is poisoning their water and food supply and making the villagers sick. Katara makes a version of this mystic figure’s outfit as a disguise in order to help the village, appearing as a benevolent spirit as she passes out food or heals the sick.

The Painted Lady costume is eerie but beautiful, and the image of Katara floating over the water covered in red markings while the gauzy fabric flows around her is particularly striking. The materials of the costume are simple, clearly made from things Katara had on hand, but they come together to make something otherworldly and unforgettable.

2 Kyoshi Warriors

The uniform of the Kyoshi Warriors is one of the most iconic outfits in the Avatar universe, making an appearance at least once in each Book and worn by both protagonists and antagonists.

The stark kabuki-esque makeup, metal fan weapons, and armored kimonos effortlessly stand out amongst the other uniforms of the Avatar universe, emphasizing the prestige and power of the Kyoshi Warriors as a group. Associated with many fan-favorite characters and scenes (most notably Azula’s disguised Earth Kingdom infiltration), the uniform is an unforgettable part of the series.

1 The Moon Spirit

Yue is the first character in Avatar to die onscreen, and the significance of her sacrifice makes her manifestation as the Moon Spirit even more impactful. When she returns, Yue looks unlike any of the spirits shown so far, ethereal and serene rather than strange or abjectly frightening, and her presence brings an immediate sense of peace.

Her flowing dress and ribbons evoke both ocean waves and clouds, and her overall appearance bears a resemblance to certain depictions of Chang’e, the Chinese Moon Goddess. The beauty of the Moon Spirit stands in striking contrast to the surrounding chaos and grief of the episode and has remained one of the most memorable images in all of Avatar.
