9 Friday The 13th: The Game

Horror fans know and love Friday the 13th, primarily because of its main antagonist, the terrifying Jason Voorhees. This particular game focuses on a team dynamic where players must try and survive a murderous rampage by Jason Voorhees.

Players are given a flashlight to see around the dimly lit areas, but using it will inevitably attract Voorhees, adding an extra layer of frightening tension to the game. One player can also take control of Jason, and hunt down the rest of the players, adding a unique twist to the formula.

8 Outlast

If pure, visceral terror is on the menu, few games manage it better than Outlast. Nothing says “terrifying” quite like infiltrating a creepy psychiatric hospital, and coming face to face with homicidal asylum patients under the control of a malevolent entity known as the Walrider.

The player can see in the dark only through the use of a camcorder equipped with a night vision filter. This forces them to hunt for fresh batteries, adding a heavy dose of tension to the game. 7 Dino Crisis 2

Resident Evil brought survival horror into the gaming consciousness, but Capcom didn’t rest on its laurels. It took the Resident Evil engine and immediately applied it to another title known as Dino Crisis, which went on to enjoy much success. The sequel still stands tall as one of the best survival horror games of the time period.

Essentially, it’s an R-rated Jurassic Park in digital form, allowing players to fight or flee from various Cretaceous-era dinosaurs. The video game is a survival horror triumph, lifting all the best elements of the film, and marrying it to a unique set of game mechanics.

The game utilizes an NPC system comprised of different job types, such as medics, soldiers and engineers. The AI of these characters is directly affected by a Fear & Trust system that will cause them to attack the player if they believe them to be the Thing. This adds another threat level on top of the extraterrestrial horrors scuttling about the environment.

4 Eternal Darkness: Sanity’s Requiem

Silicon Knights gave Nintendo gamers a reason to shout when it debuted Eternal Darkness on the Nintendo GameCube way back in 2002. At first glance, it bore many similarities to Resident Evil, but the game managed to set itself apart with some solid additions to the gameplay mechanics, notably a “crafting” system of sorts, which allowed for combining items and enchanting weapons.

The game might be fast-paced, but it’s no less creepy for it. Every inch of the game drips with a unique visual style; even the inventory system. The mixture of combat and puzzle solving may feel dated, but players owe it to themselves to give the game a shot, just to see how survival horror was beginning to evolve.

1 Silent Hill 2

Silent Hill games helped boost the survival-horror genre in the wake of Resident Evil laying the groundwork, and the second in the series is still widely regarded as the best of the bunch. It took all the disturbing gothic horror elements of the original Silent Hill, while injecting a much better and more dynamic storyline.

It’s impossible to un-see the horrors of Silent Hill 2, and those without a strong constitution won’t make it very far. If they can stomach the fear and horror long enough, they’ll go through a fascinating and terrifying journey into one man’s guilt-ridden mind, and all the nasty things it manifests.
