Spider-Man’s mantra, told to him by his Uncle Ben, is one of the most well-known in comics, but also the most repeated. Amazing Spider-Man #298 has shown why it needs so much repeating. Despite it being what forms the foundation of his life as a superhero, Spider-Man still has a tendency to forget the lesson – and almost repeat his mistakes.
“With great power, there must also come great responsibility” is a quote that is regularly used within Spider-Man comics and was even paraphrased in Sam Raimi’s 2002 Spider-Man movie. This bit of advice from Peter Parker’s uncle has lasted for years and while often repeated, has never lost relevance. Yet Peter has moments where he just can’t seem to abide by it or where he seems to forget how important the advice is to live by.
1998’s Amazing Spider-Man #298 features the webslinger going after Chance, a member of his rogues gallery. Created by David Michelinie and Todd McFarlane, this issue shows Spider-Man falling back into selfish ways of thinking. It also brings the hero close to having the same fatal consequences as he did when he lost Uncle Ben. Peter Parker takes a moment to think about how much money he could make through his heroism, and in doing so, nearly causes an innocent man to die.
In Amazing Spider-Man #298, Peter is trying to get more money – as usual – and while chasing down a story, he finds himself on the tail of the villain Chance. As he goes after Chance – a villain who relies completely on luck and betting on odds – Peter wonders if he should try to make double the money. He could do the story he’s already supposed to do, or he could hunt down a second story by letting Chance go and get paid double. Immediately after Spider-Man thinks this, there’s a blackout. And not long after the lights go out, a soldier is shot, barely surviving. Peter could have prevented this, but in the pursuit of personal gain, Peter almost caused someone to die, much in the way that his pursuit of money let to his Uncle Ben’s death.
Peter’s story as Spider-Man largely starts because he let a criminal go by him when he was thinking only of himself and money. This same criminal later shot and killed his uncle. As impactful as that was, Spider-Man nearly made the same mistake and it was only by luck that the outcome was different. Yet it does serve as a reminder that the wall-crawler isn’t infallible even when it comes to his motto. If he gets too comfortable or complacent, he could still make the exact same mistake. It wasn’t a one-time application or a one-time error. While the “great power” line is repeated a lot in the comics, it is absolutely necessary. Without reminders, Spider-Man would likely fall into the same selfish traps thanks to his perpetual financial hardships.
Since Uncle Ben’s death was such a major influence on his becoming Spider-Man, this wouldn’t seem like a mistake he would repeat. It is his most valuable learning experience and arguably his most painful loss. The first time he can truly exercise great responsibility of his own free will, he fails and in this issue, he came close to making the same mistake all over again. Though Uncle Ben’s lesson doesn’t seem like one that needs repeating, even superheroes like Spider-Man sometimes forget how major the consequences can be when they approach crime-fighting selfishly.
