While there are plenty of fictional mothers that protect, care for, and love their children, it can be much more difficult to find depictions of loving and nurturing fictional fathers. Instead, most fathers in media are usually either only focused on their jobs, giving their children “tough love,” or completely absent altogether.

But, many video games break that mold by having fathers that truly care for their children and are trying to raise them properly. Even though they are not always perfect, these fathers prove that every parent should be there for their kids.

But, after the player sees him with his adopted daughter Marlene, they notice that he is also a kind and loving father. Marlene easily breaks through his gruff exterior, and it’s obvious that he cares deeply for her.

While Barret originally adopts Marlene because she is the daughter of his childhood best friend Dyne who seemingly died years ago, he has grown to truly love and care for her as his own daughter. When Barret meets Dyne again and Dyne reveals that he wants to kill Marlene so that she can be with her mother, Barret immediately prevents Dyne from trying to hurt Marlene.

The only two characters that stick together no matter the universe or ending are Tenmyouji and his adopted son Quark.

Ever since Tenmyouji found Quark as a baby years before the events of this game, he decided that he would protect and raise the boy despite the struggles of the post-apocalyptic world they live in. Out of all the various forms of media in The Witcher franchise, nothing proves this more than the entire story in The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, since the whole game is centered around these two characters.

Throughout most of this game, Geralt is frantically searching for Ciri as she flees from the Wild Hunt, and almost all of the important story choices the player makes in this game involve Ciri. Depending on how Geralt treats Ciri and whether Geralt lets her meet her biological father, the player will see different endings.

10 Best Video Game Dads Of All Time

In a game that makes players more sad than scared, The Walking Dead: Season One delivers a devastating ending. The main protagonist up until that point, Lee Everett, has been bitten and Clementine has to either shoot him so that he remains himself in death or leave him so that he turns into a zombie. Besides the innate horror of a child having to witness a person close to them die, the power of this scene comes from the strong bond these two characters had developed.

Despite the horrors of this apocalyptic world, Lee decided to support Clementine shortly after meeting her, and he quickly begins to see her as a daughter while Clementine begins to see him as a father. With his guidance and care, Clementine learns how to take care of herself and survive long after his death.
