When it comes to conspiracy theory-type shows, nothing beats The X-Files. The X-Files has long entered the annals of popular culture, and many people consider it a legendary piece of television—or, if not legendary, then certainly influential. Tens of millions watched every episode, and it helped popularize the concepts of UFOs, conspiracy theories, and widespread government corruption and cover-ups.

However, The X-Files certainly isn’t the only show of its type. Dozens of conspiracy theory shows have been produced throughout the years, some of which are obviously better than others. These aren’t The X-Files, but they’re the next best thing.

10 Wormwood (2017)

Serving as a Netflix docudrama, Wormwood was directed by Errol Morris and stars Peter Sarsgaard as a biochemist named Frank Olson. Olson worked for the then-secretive United States Army Biological Warfare Laboratories, which operated in Maryland and researched (as its name suggests) agents of biological warfare.

Olson died in November of 1953, throwing himself out a window after being discreetly dosed with LCD by the head of Project MKUltra.

9 Bob Lazar: Area 51 & Flying Saucers (2018)

Bob Lazar is a huge name in conspiracy theory circles. Lazar claims to have worked at Area 51 reverse engineering alien technology for the American government. He claims the otherworldly tech runs on an element called Element 115, or Moscovium.

Lazar and his stories have helped popularize Area 51 as the United States’s most secretive and conspiracy-leaden site. In 2018, he released a documentary titled Bob Lazar: Area 51 & Flying Saucers in which he details his personal story and the supposed goings-on at Area 51.

8 The Family (2019)

Released in 2019, The Family is a Netflix documentary chronicling the Christian organization that also goes by The Fellowship. The Fellowship has long been said to hold great political power and sway, with high-ranking government officials and corporate executives participating in the organization. This documentary explores the history of The Fellowship, what it does, and how it could very well be the most important and powerful organization in modern American politics.

7 The Lone Gunmen (2001)

The Lone Gunmen is well known among X-Files fans. It serves as a spin-off of the popular conspiracy thriller, following the titular Lone Gunmen—Melvin, John, and Richard—a group of conspiracy theorists who run a conspiracy magazine.

The show started its life on The X-Files, and the characters and concept proved so popular that they received their own spin-off. While the show enjoyed strong critical success, it never really took off in the ratings and was cancelled after just one season.

6 UFO Files (2004 – 07)

Airing on The History Channel between 2004 and 2007, UFO Files is right up The X-Files’ alley. Despite what its name may suggest, UFO Files doesn’t just detail supposed UFO sightings.

It also concerns supposed alien sightings, meetings, and interactions with extraterrestrial creatures, government cover-ups, and military conspiracies. It’s basically The X-Files in documentary form, and it makes for endlessly intriguing viewing.

5 Unsolved History (2002 – 05)

Airing on the Discovery Channel between 2002 and 2005, Unsolved History concerned itself with unexplained cases throughout human history. Each episode saw a team of experts and scientists trying to deduce the truth behind historical mysteries and conspiracy theories.

Some of these include the JFK assassination, the death of Princess Diana, Roswell, and, of course, Area 51. It is essential viewing for anyone who enjoys conspiracy theories and history, even though the “answers” may be understandably frustrating and inconclusive.

4 Zero Hour (2013)

Zero Hour did not last long, but that doesn’t mean it isn’t worth watching. The show began its life in February 2013 as a midseason replacement on ABC before it was canceled just three episodes later. The remaining episodes were aired throughout the summer of 2013.

The story concerns Hank Galliston, a paranormal skeptic who runs and publishes a magazine for fellow skeptics. However, Hank and his wife are quickly pulled into a conspiracy surrounding a historical relic from Nazi Germany.

3 Project Blue Book (2019 – 20)

In many ways, Project Blue Book is the spiritual successor to The X-Files. It stars Aidan Gillen as J. Allen Hynek, a historical astronomer and ufologist who served as a scientific advisor for Project Blue Book from 1952 to 1969.

Project Blue Book was a study undertaken by the US Air Force to analyze UFO data and determine if extraterrestrial aircraft were a threat to the American public. The project ended in December of 1969 after collecting over 12,000 UFO reports. They concluded that UFOs had no correlation with alien spacecraft. The story behind the project is chronicled in this History Channel drama.

2 The Conspiracy Files (2006 – )

The Conspiracy Files is essentially the British version of UFO Files and Unsolved History. Broadcast through BBC Two, the show chronicles various modern-day conspiracy theories.

The show has examined the death of Princess Diana, conspiracy theories surrounding the 9/11 attacks, the Oklahoma City bombing, and theories concerning the supposed death of Osama bin Laden, among others. Despite airing since 2006, The Conspiracy Files is frustratingly short on episodes, with the show having no set schedule.

1 Falling Skies (2011 – 15)

Created by Robert Rodat and produced by Steven Spielberg, Falling Skies aired for five seasons and 52 episodes on TNT. The story takes place six months after an alien invasion that wiped out 90% of the world’s population and disrupted power supplies, essentially leaving humanity in a new Dark Age.

At the heart of the story is Tom Mason, a former history professor who now runs a militia regiment against the alien invaders. Falling Skies proved one of TNT’s most popular dramas, and it received numerous accolades throughout its run, including a Young Artist Award for Maxim Knight and a Critics’ Choice TV Award for Most Exciting New Series.
