Stefan and Elena were the heart and soul of The Vampire Diaries for the first few seasons of the series. There would be no show without their love story, and the couple kept the characters and the viewers grounded. Because their relationship was at the front and center of the drama, it was easy to get attached.

10 Elena Lets Stefan Drink Her Blood

No one was worse at being a vampire than Stefan. His pure heart didn’t mix well with a vampire’s predatory nature, and he was unable to drink human blood without developing an addiction. Stefan might have been able to survive by feeding on animals, but it left him weak and vulnerable.

To help Stefan learn control, Elena let him drink her blood every day. She knew Stefan would never do anything to hurt her, and knowing it was Elena he was feeding on helped keep him in check.

9 Stefan Resists Klaus’s Compulsion To Save Elena

Compulsion doesn’t just mess with a vampire’s mind, it messes with their body. When Klaus compelled Stefan to kill Elena, every fiber of his being was begging him to follow the command. His legs moved without his permission, and Stefan had to physically hold himself back from hurting her.

Miraculously, Stefan was able to overcome the mind control, which was even impressive to the oldest vampire in history. Klaus tells Stefan that the only thing more powerful than his craving for blood is his love for Elena.

8 Elena Chooses Stefan

Before Elena was turned into a vampire, she never loved anyone as much as she loved Stefan. No matter what horrible things he did, she never gave up on him. Elena’s unconditional love for him was admirable, and she saw the good in him when he didn’t see it in himself.

Stefan and Elena’s moment of normalcy is one of the most heartwarming scenes in the series. Elena’s life was turned upside down, and all she wanted was to kiss her boyfriend on top of the Ferris Wheel.

When their night turns into a disaster and Damon almost kills Caroline, Elena isn’t at all surprised that they couldn’t have one outing that went well. Stefan gets Elena out of bed before the sun rises and takes her back to the carnival. He compels the guard to leave and takes Elena to the top of the Ferris Wheel so he can kiss her.

5 Stefan Calls Elena After He Leaves Town

Saving his brother’s life came at a price, and Stefan was forced to leave Damon and Elena behind to travel the country and help Klaus make hybrids. Klaus was under the impression that Elena was dead and Stefan was doing whatever he could to keep it that way.

Stefan is forced to become the ripper to keep Klaus from killing Damon and finding out the truth about Elena. But Stefan can’t help himself from calling the girl he loves on a night when he feels particularly hopeless. He doesn’t say anything, but Elena figures out who it is and reminds Stefan that she loves him.

4 Elena Convinces Stefan To Keep Fighting

When Stefan drinks human blood, he loses complete control. After he’s kidnapped and forced to give in to the thirst, Stefan goes on a binge. He soon realizes what he’s done and decides that he doesn’t deserve to live anymore.

The pain he’s caused other people sends Stefan down a path of self-hatred, and he goes outside without his ring and waits for the sun to come up. Elena is able to get through to him and remind him that he’s strong enough to keep fighting. It’s a beautiful moment that exemplified just how powerful the love between them was.

3 Stefans Goes In The Tomb After Elena

Bonnie and her grandmother cast a spell on the tomb and led all of the vampires to believe they’re dropping the seal. Elena goes inside with Damon, and Stefan waits for them to come back out. Bonnie warns Stefan that if he goes in, he’ll be trapped, but when he hears Elena scream he doesn’t think twice.

Stefan runs inside and saves her from Anna and is unable to leave the tomb afterward. Elena is heartbroken to discover that Stefan can’t come back out, but Bonnie and Grams let all the vampires escape in order to save him.

2 Elena Tells Stefan Not To Hide From Her

Stefan worries that if Elena sees who he really is, she’ll be afraid. He turns away from her when his fangs start to come out and tries to hide his face. In one of the most tender moments on the show, Elena tells Stefan not to hide from her.

She turns him back around and looks at his face in what appears to be awe. Elena kisses Stefan to let him know that she accepts him for who he is, and when she pulls away, Stefan is able to regain control of himself.

1 Stefan Takes Elena On A Hike Before The Sacrifice

Elena never wanted to become a vampire, but when Damon force feeds her his blood before she’s supposed to be sacrificed in Klaus’s ritual, she’s left with no choice. The elixir that was going to bring her back to life is rendered useless, and Elena is forced to accept her fate.

Stefan takes Elena on a hike and as they watch the sunset, she confesses to Stefan how much she wishes she could have the chance to start a family. Stefan holds Elena while she cries and they take solace in each other’s arms.
