The neverending struggle between the light and dark, between good and bad, between heroes and villains, has been at the heart of Star Wars since 1977, and it forever will be. Even though we will always root for the heroes, many of the franchise’s villains are simply incredible and often the best part of the content they are in.

Whether it is their genius, their power, their charisma, or their evil, so many villains possess an array of qualities that make them ooze cool. While not all of them have Han Solo levels of charisma, and some are far from cool, so many command the screen in a way that makes the audience’s jaws drop.

10 The Inquisitorius

10 FanFavorite Star Wars Villains Ranked From Lamest To Coolest

The Grand Inquisitor on his own would be higher on this list. His skill and intelligence, along with the voice work from Jason Isaacs, are all fantastic, making him one of the best parts of Star Wars Rebels’ first season.

However, looking at the Inquisitorius as a whole with the sisters and brothers of varying numbers, they fall slightly lower. The other Inquisitors we see are all just a bit easy to defeat to those with a decent amount of power and are similar to one another with quite a low level of fear factor in them. Add in their controversial helicopter-esque lightsabers, and the coolness of these animated/video game villains is decreased massively.

9 General Grievous

General Grievous is not necessarily uncool. In fact, his presence alone with his four lightsabers, evil-looking eyes, and cybernetic body can be imposing, and there’s no doubt that he outright terrified many younger kids when Revenge of the Sith first premiered. However, it is very easy to look at him as being fairly uncool.

He is a cyborg with breathing problems who ultimately does not have that much power and doesn’t have the ability to wield the Force. While he commands the droid army, he is still under the thumb of Dooku, who is under the thumb of Palpatine. No villain on this list is outright lame, but, from what we see and hear from Grievous in the prequels and The Clone Wars, despite his sporadic terrific moments, most other villains surpass him.

8 Moff Gideon

10 FanFavorite Star Wars Villains Ranked From Lamest To Coolest

In all honesty, it would be easy to put Moff Gideon at the bottom of this list. We have not seen that much of him, and he has not been hugely successful in his plots thus far. However, a few key factors make him such a cool villain, with perhaps the main one simply being Giancarlo Esposito.

The man oozes charisma, and, in the role of Imperial Moff, he has shone. His presence, overall demeanor, as well as his use of the Darksaber and intelligence, have made him a highlight of The Mandalorian, and it is safe to say fans are excited to see where his story goes in season three and beyond.

7 Count Dooku

10 FanFavorite Star Wars Villains Ranked From Lamest To Coolest

Count Dooku from the prequel trilogy would likely fall much lower on this list, but, when you throw in The Clone Wars’ version of the character, he becomes far cooler, and it becomes easier to appreciate a lot of his brilliance.

Dooku’s exquisite pajamas alone in his home on Serrano earn him a place higher than tenth on this list. Seeing those regal robes alongside the eloquent nature of his lightsaber skill is fantastic. While not stereotypically leather jacket with slicked-back hair kind of cool, Dooku brings his own set of attributes to the table.

6 Asajj Ventress

10 FanFavorite Star Wars Villains Ranked From Lamest To Coolest

Dooku’s apprentice is far cooler in a more typical way. Ultimately, Asajj Ventress’s status as one of the best and most cunning characters in The Clone Wars makes her extremely unlucky for missing out on the top five.

Ventress is smart, sassy, and has many fantastic moments. Her fearlessness when facing opponents stronger than her, and the fact that she survives throughout her life from Sith assassin to bounty hunter to Jedi ally, is brilliant. Even just aesthetically, the look of Ventress and her lightsabers make her incredibly cool.

5 Emperor Palpatine

10 FanFavorite Star Wars Villains Ranked From Lamest To Coolest

The main villain of the Skywalker saga is a character some will want to see higher on this list, but, considering the outright badassery of a lot of Star Wars villains, cracking the top five is good for Palpatine.

There are two central components to Palpatine’s coolness: the first is his lightsaber dismantling of Maul and Savage in The Clone Wars, a moment that earns him fifth place automatically. The other is his mind. The way Palpatine manipulates everything and everyone to aid his evil goals is jaw-dropping. Looks-wise, Palpatine, as both Supreme Chancellor and the Emperor, lacks some of the badass aesthetic of other villains, but he definitely pulls off the “evil man in evil robes” aesthetic.

4 Kylo Ren

10 FanFavorite Star Wars Villains Ranked From Lamest To Coolest

To sequel trilogy detractors seeing Kylo Ren on any ranking above Sidious is blasphemy. But, the fact of the matter is in terms of coolness, Adam Driver helps put Kylo well over Palpatine.

The clothing choices for Kylo, the way he ignites his saber, his scar, and his dedication to continuing what his grandfather had started make him a decidedly intense villain. Throw in moments like walking through the waves on Kef-Bir, killing Snoke, destroying the village on Mustafar, and more, and you have an undeniably cool villain and perhaps the sequel trilogy’s best character.

3 Grand Admiral Thrawn

10 FanFavorite Star Wars Villains Ranked From Lamest To Coolest

Putting Grand Admiral Thrawn so high on this list, a character who has only appeared in books and one singular TV show thus far in the canon is less of a concrete “he has proved himself to be this cool,” and more of a “we know he will prove himself to be this cool.”

Thrawn is immense. His calm demeanor, his tactical genius, his love of art, his skill in combat, the respect he commands from everyone around him, literally everything about him from the way he walks to the way he talks, oozes a certain kind of charisma that other characters can only dream of. It is all but confirmed Thrawn is returning sooner rather than later, and, between his Legends legacy and that which he is building in the canon through his excellent novels and Rebels, the Chiss could even rise on this list in the years to come.

2 Maul

10 FanFavorite Star Wars Villains Ranked From Lamest To Coolest

Of course, to say that Thrawn could overtake the top two villains on this list, who could also be easily considered the two best villains in all of Star Wars, is a hard task, with Maul cultivating a character and story in Star Wars better than most.

Maul, as Darth Maul in The Phantom Menace, could easily have earned a top-six/top-seven spot in terms of coolness based on the Duel of the Fates and his awesome aesthetic. However, when you throw in the work that Dave Filoni and co have done with the character across The Clone Wars and Rebels with jaw-dropping moments, incredible battles, exceptional voice work from Sam Witwer, and a generally outstanding story, he is easily the second coolest villain in Star Wars canon.

1 Darth Vader

As unreal as Maul’s journey has been in the past twenty-two years, no villain in Star Wars ever has or ever will come close to the legacy crafted by cinema’s most iconic villain in the past four-plus decades.

The suit, the breathing, the voice, the castle, the skill in the Force, the technique with a saber, and the sheer level of intimidation all accumulate to create Darth Vader, the best and coolest villain in Star Wars. Even with just the Skywalker saga, Vader would top this list. However, you add in “Twilight of the Apprentice,” his awesome comics, his final Clone Wars moment, and the lasting impact he had in-universe after his death, and the distance between him and the others becomes colossal.
