Nickelodeon’s The Legend of Korra has just as much comedy, action, and drama as the original series, The Last Airbender. This means that it also has just as many tear-jerking moments. Arguably, since The Legend of Korra is considered to be a more mature series, it may actually have more sad moments.

These moments may spring from character deaths, arguments, or emotional breakdowns. But either way, there are plenty of moments that can make the audience tear-bend. And a certain number of moments stand out the most for being the saddest.

10 Mako’s Sacrifice

During the final battle of the show, Mako stays behind to blow up Kuvira’s weapons with his lightning-bending. This will likely lead to Mako himself being blown up and killed, but he makes everyone else leave, and chooses to stay in order to save the world. For a moment, it seems like he is actually going to die, which would be incredibly sad as Mako is one of the main characters. Thankfully, Bolin appears, and the two make it out alive.

Since this moment doesn’t last for very long, and Mako ends up being fine, this moment isn’t as sad as many others. But the short heartbreak that viewers felt cannot be ignored.

9 Hiroshi Sato’s Death

Hiroshi Sato is a complicated character. In the first season, he sides with the Equalists and provides weapons for them, which makes him a villain. This causes a rift between him and his daughter Asami. However, by the fourth season, the two begin rebuilding their relationship.

But this relationship is halted by the battle against Kuvira, during which Hiroshi dies after throwing his daughter to safety out of the machinery they are both operating. Since Hiroshi was a villain, it’s hard to feel super sad about his death, hence the lower ranking. But the effect it has on Asami is poignant, as losing a parent is generally awful to imagine.

8 When Mako Explains How His Parents Died

Bolin and Mako’s parents were murdered right in front of Mako when he was very young. This has led to Mako being a very blunt and guarded person, as he was left with the responsibility of taking care of his brother. The two lived on the streets and had to work for gangs, all of which Mako tells his future girlfriend Korra about one night.

Since the sad moment isn’t actually shown, and is only talked about, this moment isn’t assad as it could have been. But the effect that this event has had on Mako is clear, and it makes his current situation, of looking for his kidnapped brother, even sadder.

7 When Aang’s Children Argue

Tenzin, Kya, and Bumi all reflect parts of their parents Aang and Katara, which audiences loved to see. So when the three of them start arguing about who their dad loved the most in season two, it’s very upsetting to watch. The idea that the beloved characters from The Last Airbender may not have been perfect parents is a hard pill to swallow, and the effects that bad parenting has on children is often heartwrenching to see and experience.

The three of them do manage to reconcile with the knowledge that they were all loved by their parents, so thankfully the sadness doesn’t last for long.

6 When Korra Has Lost Her Bending

In one of Korra’s best episodes, she has lost her bending to Amon, and it seems like she will never get it back. Even Katara cannot help heal her. The sorrow that Korra feels from this leads her to reject Mako, and she runs to the edge of an icy cliff, where she breaks down crying.

This moment comes near the end of the first season, and for a minute the audience was heartbroken at the idea that this was how the season could end. Thankfully, Aang appears to help restore her bending, which stops this situation from being the ultimate saddest moment, but it still showed what Korra sacrificed in order to keep Republic City safe.

5 Tarrlok And Amon’s Death

Tarrlok and Amon are the series’ most tragic villains, as they are given a flashback episode where the hardships that they faced as children are shown. While they do dastardly things, the audience is made to sympathize with them, so it’s inevitably really sad when they die.

The two of them are escaping on a speedboat, after being separated for two decades. Amon is planning the new life that they will lead together, but then Tarrlok electrocutes the boat using one of Avatar’s most powerful weapons, blowing both of them up. It’s a haunting moment, and judging by the tear on Amon’s face seconds before it happens, he was expecting it. Tears were very much on viewers’ faces too.

4 Wan’s Death

Wan is only introduced for two episodes, but as those episodes are based around him, the audience becomes very attached to him. The episodes document his entire life up until his death, where he lays on a battlefield, having failed to stop all of the wars that rage across his world. It seems like this battle is what has killed him.

Wan’s death is tragic because he couldn’t do all that he set out to do before he died, and it’s very sad to watch someone die with so many regrets. Thankfully the Avatar cycle lives on, but it’s emotional to see one of them die so sadly.

3 When Korra Loses Her Connection To The Past Avatars

In one of the series’ most shocking scenes, where Korra is fighting Unaloq, Unaloq manages to drag the Avatar spirit out of Korra, and attacks it, which cuts Korra off from all of the previous Avatars. The Avatar’s connection to their past lives is a crucial thing to the Avatar’s identity, so it’s haunting to think that Korra will never have that.

This moment is also incredibly sad to viewers because this means that they will never see Aang again, as he has been cut off from Korra. Since the Avatar fandom has such an attachment to Aang, the idea that he is truly gone is equivalent to a gut punch.

2 When Tenzin Nearly Dies

Tenzin is a beloved character, as he is the father figure to Korra. So in Tenzin’s most iconic scene, when he is fighting the Red Lotus, it leads to a heartbreaking moment. At first, he is winning against Zaheer, but when the rest of the Red Lotus gang up on him, they begin beating him down one after the other.

It’s brutal to watch, so much so that the camera pans away, and the episode ends before audiences can really know what happens to Tenzin. Even the mere thought that Tenzin could die is enough to make an Avatar fan cry, so the fact that the episode left audiences thinking that made it one of the series’ saddest moments.

1 The Whole Of Korra’s Trauma

After season 3, Korra is left physically and emotionally traumatized. Seeing someone as strong as Korra go through so much pain is heartbreaking to watch. This trauma stays with her throughout a large portion of season four, though viewers thankfully manage to see her heal and move forward.

At the end of season three, when Jinora and the other airbenders celebrate the new Air Nomads, Korra can only watch sadly and shed a tear. It leaves the season on an emotional note, and creates a feeling of melancholy that lasts all the way until the next season. Because of how long-lasting this upsetting moment was, it is the saddest moment in all of The Legend of Korra.
