Horror video games and horror movies have developed a rather prosperous relationship. Adaptations of classic horror franchises like Resident Evil and Silent Hill have been considerably successful at movie theatres. Additionally, The Last of Us has recently inked a deal with HBO for a live-action series.

The continued popularity of horror video games in the movie industry makes us wonder what other horror game franchises could become terrifying movies. Plus, moviegoers can usually enjoy these horror adaptations even if they haven’t played the game. Here are ten horror video game franchises, both new and old, that could become the next blockbuster.

10 Bioshock

Bioshock was created by 2K Studios in 2007. After developing a cult following for the first installment of the series, 2K dropped Bioshock 2 and Bioshock Infinite in 2010 and 2013, respectively. All three chapters were lauded by critics and regular gamers alike, as the horror franchise pushed barriers in interactive character development while also scaring anyone who played it.

A Bioshock film would be awesome regardless of it being set in the underwater metropolis from the first two games or the above-water city of Emporia in Bioshock Infinite. It would be interesting to see how “Big Daddies” and “Little Sisters” translate to the silver screen; it would probably be scary as heck.

9 Dead Space

Although there have already been animated adaptations of the horror video game franchise, Dead Space fans would definitely appreciate a live-action production. EA studios have produced three chapters of the series between 2008 and 2013. The video game was also adapted into two novels in 2010 and 2012. The murky survival games are lucid nightmares that disturb with jump-scares and stomach-churning creatures.

With all of the content that branched from the video games, it is apparent that there is a rather large fanbase for Dead Space. Even eight years after the release of its last game there should be demand for a live-action movie.

8 F.E.A.R.

The F.E.A.R. franchise had a relatively long run that stretched from 2005 to 2014 with the release of three games. F.E.A.R. stands for First Encounter Assault Recon, and you play as an armed soldier dutied with stopping Alma Wade, a psychic little girl who has escaped from a government lab. Instead of barbies, Alma likes to play with soldiers’ minds in this first-person shooter.

Not only is F.E.A.R. a terrific shooter with petrifying visuals, but it is also centered on an intriguing storyline. The legend of Alma Wade is worth making into a feature film, even if there isn’t already a massive following clamoring for a F.E.A.R. production.

7 Dying Light

This zombie survival series erupted onto the video game scene fairly recently and has garnered a multitude of critical acclaim through various awards and nominations. The Dying Light franchise currently consists of three parts: Dying Light, Dying Light: The Following, and Dying Light: Bad Blood. The official Dying Light 2 is in development and its release date is yet to be announced.

Although there are already plenty of zombies in horror movies, the unique, zombie-infested universe created in Dying Light would be cool to see recreated on the big screen. The whole parkour dimension of the game would also be an authentic dynamic to what is already offered by horror cinema.

6 The Evil Within

The Evil Within is a third-person survival game that tests your skills against, you guessed it, zombies. However, The Evil Within is able to differentiate itself from the throng of current horror games with its wide array of “zombie species” and its thrilling plotline. The first two chapters were released in 2014 and 2017, and The Evil Within 3 is currently in the works.

These games (along with the others on this list) are both scary and exhilarating enough to entertain audiences if it were a movie, even if they have never played the game. The Bethesda horror video game franchise is worth checking out for sure.

5 Outlast

The Outlast series consists of two games released in 2013 and 2017, as well as an extensive, prequel add-on called Outlast: Whistleblower that came in 2014. These games are the epitome of terror. In the first game, you play as Miles Upshur, a starving detective who decides to investigate a deserted mental hospital. The key differentiating factor of Outlast is that players are not given weapons and have no way of defending themselves. You can only run and hide, which charges the impact of surprise appearances from ghosts and creatures.

The Outlast series will be a challenge to any seasoned gamer. If Outlast was recreated into a live-action film, the result would be exquisitely horrifying.

4 Little Nightmares

Little Nightmares is a horror puzzle video game that was released in 2017 and faced great enthusiasm from the gaming community. Little Nightmares 2 was originally set to release in 2020, but a specific date hasn’t been announced yet so fans may have to wait until 2021 for the sequel.

Even though the animation of Little Nightmares makes the game seem kinda warm and inviting, this video game bites with creepy, sometimes abrupt background music and sounds, as well as maniacal voiceovers. The puzzles in the game are stimulating and fun and worth giving a try. A Little Nightmares movie would be like mixing Ratitoullie and Mad Max together.

3 Dead Rising

This horror franchise gave gamers the experience of being a total god in a world of swarming zombies. No other zombie game has reached such a peak of interactiveness and total control in terms of weapon designing, world roaming, and outfit building. Dead Rising has released four full-length chapters between 2006 and 2016, along with several spin-off add-ons.

Anyone could argue that Dead Rising was sort of recreated on the silver screen by the Zombieland franchise. Dead Rising films have come out but they were forgetful microbudget productions. A Dead Rising feature film with a larger budget would certainly make for a fun watch.

2 Nazi Zombies

Call of Duty: Nazi Zombies began in 2008 when it was added as a game mode in Call of Duty: World at War. The first available map for COD’s horde mode was the claustrophobic, but legendary, Nacht der Untoten. Since then, Nazi Zombies skyrocketed in popularity and the game mode expanded into 31 maps, according to Fandom.

The Nazi Zombies maps became excruciatingly larger throughout the 2010s with more available doors, weapons, perks, and enemies. Although there have been several attempts at a Nazi-themed zombie movie, such as Overlord in 2018, a movie centered around one of the quirky, lovable, casts of characters in Call of Duty: Nazi Zombies could be dynamite.

1 Metro

This post-apocalyptic first-person shooter franchise began with the release of Metro 2033 in 2010. Created by the Ukrainian studio 4A Games, Metro games test a player’s scavenging and survival skills as they traverse through crumbled communities infested with scary alien creatures.

Through several releases, the Metro series continues to improve tremendously on its graphics and player experience. The series’ most recent installment, Metro Exodus, has been celebrated by critics and regular gamers. The aesthetic that the Metro franchise has created would be perfect for a horror movie.
