10 Julianne – My Best Friends Wedding

This role is easily one of the few that Roberts fans cannot stand – the reason being that Julianne was devious and out to sabotage her best friend’s happiness. Holding on to feelings for 20 years, Julianne did not take the news lightly that she was invited to her friend’s wedding.

Instead of getting to know the bride-to-be, she set out on a mission to destroy her happiness in the hopes she would get her shot at the man she wanted. It took her the entire movie to realize that hurting the soon-to-be-bride would also cause her friend pain. Despite many fan’s feelings, My Best Friend’s Wedding is still considered a must-watch.

9 Maggie Carpenter – Runaway Bride

The romantic comedy has been Julia Roberts’ comfortable home, over the course of her early career, and it’s safe to say that pairing with the great Richard Gere is always a smart move. In Runaway Bride, Roberts played Maggie Carpenter, a woman who never had an issue finding love, but never seems to be able to walk down the aisle.

Maggie is ranked low on the list of Roberts’ likable characters because she didn’t know what she wanted. Roberts is a great actress, but the role left more to be desired.

8 Isabel Kelly – Stepmom

What made Isabel such an intriguing character was that she was real. While most movies could be based on real-life situations, Stepmom was one that hit home for many adults around the world. Paired with veteran actress Susan Sarandon, Roberts more than held her own. This role, for Roberts, was about restraint, and as much as Jackie disliked Isabel, she had to learn it was about the betterment of the kids.

Eat Pray Love centers around Elizabeth and her search for life and the film allowed Roberts to take center stage, mastering the role with style and grace.

Circling the globe, Elizabeth set out on a journey to find herself spiritually and emotionally. In doing so, she was able to let go of the weight that was holding her down. This is easily one of Roberts’ finest moments on film.

While not her first movie, Mystic Pizza is where Julia Roberts put her self in the view of the industry. Playing the role of Daisy, this role was a great way for viewers to get a glimpse of what was to come in her career. Daisy was a bit of a wild child, but as always, it was Roberts’ energetic smile that made viewers forget any of her bad deeds.

She wanted love, but she also wanted to find a way out of Mystic. As the pizza shop gained notoriety, Daisy was going through her own crisis in the world of love, while strengthening her bond with her younger sister.

5 Shelby Eatenton Latcherie – Steel Magnolias

Fans of Julia Roberts this early in her career were just wondering where the role of Shelby would take her. She had to share the screen with established veterans, such as Dolly Parton, Sally Field, and Olympia Dukakis, and yet stole center stage.

A Southern belle, Shelby stole the hearts of viewers with her “twang” and personality. However, it was the heartwrenching end to the movie where Roberts began to draw in the loyal fans that she still has now.

Anna was free inside the walls of William’s loft, but still had her Hollywood persona to content with, outside. Notting Hill struck a chord with believers and has gone down as one of the best rom-coms ever.
