Since his indie breakout hit Clerks, Kevin Smith has been known for writing and directing comedies filled with quirky New Jersians, boundary-pushing humor, and pop culture references. Smith’s movies were referencing Marvel superheroes years before the MCU made them cool.

While Smith doesn’t direct straightforward spoofs like Mel Brooks or the Zucker brothers, his films contain plenty of satirical Brooks-adjacent jabs at existing cinematic classics. In some cases, Smith has included nods and winks to certain movies, and in other cases, he’s lifted entire scenes.

10 Return Of The Jedi (1983)

A huge part of the charm of Smith’s debut feature Clerks is its laidback tone. There’s a lot of existential dread involving menial labor and the rat race, and some complicated emotions in the romantic subplots, but the movie has plenty of time for rambling discussions about popular culture.

As a prime example, Dante and Randal debate whether any innocent contractors were killed when the Rebels destroyed the mid-construction second Death Star in Return of the Jedi.

9 Duck Soup (1933)

Smith brought the self-aware edge of the View Askewniverse full circle in Jay and Silent Bob Reboot when he included himself as a character in the script, directing the new Bluntman & Chronic movie.

When Silent Bob comes face-to-face with a certain hockey jersey-clad filmmaker he happens to resemble, the two recreate Chico and Groucho’s iconic mirror gag from the classic Marx Brothers comedy Duck Soup.

8 The Fugitive (1993)

Throughout the second and third acts of Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back, the titular duo is pursued by Federal Wildlife Marshal Willenholly, played hilariously by Will Ferrell. Interestingly, the character’s name is a nod to Will and Holly Marshall from TV’s Land of the Lost, which Ferrell later adapted for the big screen.

The scene in which Marshal Willenholly corners Jay and Silent Bob at the edge of a storm drain hanging over a dam is a reference to the iconic scene between Tommy Lee Jones and Harrison Ford in The Fugitive.

7 The Silence Of The Lambs (1991)

Jay’s affectionate homage to The Silence of the Lambs is a running gag in the View Askewniverse. Every now and then, Bob will put on “Goodbye Horses” by Q Lazzarus, and much like Buffalo Bill in the movie, Jay will strip off his clothes, tuck his genitals between his legs, and do a sensual dance.

This gag was introduced in Clerks II and reprised in Jay and Silent Bob Reboot. He even repeats Bill’s unforgettably crass dialogue: “Would you f*** me? I’d f*** me. I’d f*** me hard.”

6 Apocalypse Now (1979)

After the success of Clerks, Smith wrote and directed Mallrats, which is essentially the same movie – a day in the lives of two bickering New Jersians – but set in a mall.

When Brodie arrives at the mall at the beginning of the movie, he says, “I love the smell of commerce in the morning.” This is a nod to “I love the smell of napalm in the morning,” Robert Duvall’s iconic line from the gonzo Vietnam War epic masterpiece Apocalypse Now.

5 Home Alone (1990)

When Salma Hayek’s Serendipity is introduced in Dogma, the mythical muse claims to have inspired 19 of the top 20 highest-grossing movies.

She doesn’t expressly name Home Alone as the one she wasn’t responsible for, but she describes its ludicrous plot in no uncertain terms and then says, “Somebody sold their soul to Satan to get the grosses up on that piece of s***.”

4 Glengarry Glen Ross (1992)

When Milly and her friends are abducted by the KKK in Jay and Silent Bob Reboot, Jay and Bob launch a rescue campaign. While Jay sneaks over and frees Milly and her friends, Bob is tasked with distracting the Klansmen.

He stalls them for time with a random, baffling reference to Alec Baldwin’s monologue in Glengarry Glen Ross: “I come from downtown. I’m here for Mitch and Murray.”

3 Batman V Superman: Dawn Of Justice (2016)

Ben Affleck reprises his role as Holden from Chasing Amy in one of the best scenes in Jay and Silent Bob Reboot. He gives a long, heartfelt monologue about the joys of fatherhood that ends with a hilarious jab at Batfleck’s most infamous moment from Batman v Superman.

Holden explains to Jay, “Suddenly, you realize you’re not Bruce Wayne anymore. You’re Thomas Wayne. Or Bruce Wayne’s mom, whose name escapes me.” This is, of course, a reference to BvS’ notorious “Save Martha!” scene.

2 Star Wars (1977)

Seth Rogen and Elizabeth Banks star as the titular pair of roommates in Zack and Miri Make a Porno. Strapped for cash, they decide to put together a cast and crew for an adult movie.

Zack and Miri start off making an X-rated Star Wars parody before paring back and shooting a smaller-scale porno in the coffee shop where Zack works (a parallel with Smith himself shooting Clerks in the convenience store where he used to work).

1 Good Will Hunting (1997)

Matt Damon and Ben Affleck worked on a couple of Kevin Smith movies before writing starring roles for themselves in Good Will Hunting. The duo reunited with Smith for a hysterical parody of their breakout hit in Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back.

When Jay and Bob get to Hollywood, they stumble onto the set of Good Will Hunting 2: Hunting Season. The scene sees Will getting into another intellectual discussion with the stuffy Harvard kid – except this time, the kid has boned up on Gordon Wood. Will whips out a shotgun and blows the guy away. It’s a hilarious play on Damon’s post-Bourne reinvention as an action hero after his sensitive dramatic turn in Good Will Hunting.
