When it comes to aggregates that help potential viewers decide whether or not they want to watch a movie, they have a tone of platforms at their disposal. There’s Rotten Tomatoes, which is based on critics’ thoughts, and there’s IMDb, which averages the scores of millions of users. But one of the most fascinating and oldest is CinemaScore, which has been surveying general audiences’ thoughts right out of the theatre since 1979.

CinemaScore gives movies an average score in the form of a letter grade, and interestingly enough, there have only been 22 “F” graded movies in the company’s 43 years. Between the dumbest parody movie ever made, some hilariously bad remakes, and some genuinely good movies, there are as many surprises in there as there are predictable entries.

10 Disaster Movie (2008) – 1.9

If any movie deserves the dreaded “F” CinemaScore, it’s Disaster Movie. Even the audiences that the movie was aimed at, young teenagers who didn’t know any better, knew that the price of admission was a waste of money. Between the best and worst disaster movies, the 2008 parody film attempts to mock all of them, but the only film it’s actually mocking is itself.

For some reason, the parodies aren’t limited to disaster films either. Disaster Movie also has countless dramas, sci-fi flicks, superhero movies, and even Sex and the City in its crosshairs. Disaster Movie is the film version of the clown in the classroom who thinks they’re funny, but they’re really just distracting and annoying.

9 Bolero (1984) – 3.0

A movie getting an “F” is such a rare event that it’s almost as if filmmakers have to try and make a film so bad to get the grade. As CinemaScore was founded in 1979, it took a whole five years for the first “F” to be awarded, and it went to 1984’s Bolero.

The film follows a woman who has a sexual awakening, and she then journeys across the world in search of the perfect suitor to have her first sexual experience with. Not only does it have the rare grade from CinemaScore, but it also has a 0% rotten rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

8 The Wicker Man (2006) – 3.7

The Wicker Man is a remake of the 1973 film of the same name, which is a compelling horror movie with a great score of 7.5 on IMDb, but the same can’t be said of the 2006 version. Part of what makes the movie so negatively received is Nicolas Cage, as he plays Edward, who gets trapped on the island.

Cage is his typical self, as he overacts at any given moment. However, that’s part of what makes it so watchable. Though it has an “F” CinemaScore, a 3.7 on IMDb, and fails on every cinematic level, The Wicker Man is so bad it’s good for that exact reason.

7 The Devil Inside (2012) – 4.2

If there’s any genre that gets most of the brute of the audience in terms of CinemaScore surveys, it’s horror. It’s so hard to pull off a great horror movie, or even a serviceable one, and if it isn’t scary then it’s most likely unintentionally funny. Unfortunately, that’s the case with the 2012 movie The Devil Inside.

The movie arrived a little too late. Though found-footage movies had a surge in popularity in the late 2000s, it was a short-lived trend, and they were starting to wind down by 2012. As that type of movie is all but non-existent at this point, The Devil Inside could very well have been the final nail in the coffin.

6 The Grudge (2020) – 4.3

As the movie has been remade so many times, The Grudge is almost like a game of Telephone, as the more filmmakers that get their hands on it, the less familiar it is of the source material. And in the case of The Grudge, that isn’t exactly a good thing.

The original 2002 Japanese horror movie is a phenomenon and one of the scariest movies of the 2000s. The 2004 remake was more palatable for American audiences but lost some of its charm. And now, with the 2020 remake, it has the worst reception yet. 2020’s The Grudge replaced the creepy tension building with the cheesy jump scares, and its “F” rating is hardly surprising.

5 Lucky Numbers (2000) – 5.0

It’s rare for romantic comedies to get an “F” grade, as they’re the most general audience-pleasing movies as they come. However, Lucky Numbers was just that bad. The movie follows two news reporters who work together to rig the state lottery, and with an IMDb score of 5.0, Lucky Numbers is literally bang average.

Thanks to her portrayal of the quirky Phoebe Buffay in Friends, Lisa Kudrow landed more than a few major roles in comedies in the late-90s and early-2000s. But even though Lucky Numbers sees her using her typical quirky appeal, it didn’t work this time around.

4 The Box (2009) – 5.6

After the huge success of the cult hit Donnie Darko, film buffs were ruminating over writer-director Richard Kelly and the potential he had. However, that came to a grinding halt with his sophomore effort, Southland Tales. And following that, his third film, The Box, unfortunately cemented Kelly as a one-hit-wonder director.

The movie has a brilliant premise, and it could have been a great mystery thriller. The Box is about a family who is given a box with a button on top, and if they hit that button, somebody they don’t know will die, but they’ll be rewarded with $1 million. However, the approach was rather convoluted, and the plot twists weren’t exciting and didn’t make any sense.

3 Solaris (2002) – 6.2

It’s hard to justify Solaris’s CinemaScore, as it’s a perfectly fine sci-fi romance movie with tons of chemistry between lead actors George Clooney and Natasha McElhone. Though it might not be as great as the 1972 original, the Steven Soderbergh-directed remake is full of interesting new ideas.

The film is often recommended, as Solaris is one of the best dramatic sci-fi movies for Melancholia fans. As Soderbergh is so great at portraying realistic relationships in movies, the space station and other sci-fi elements serve as more of a backdrop to the narrative. But that might have been why audiences weren’t interested, as it wasn’t exactly the visual spectacle they could have been expecting.

2 Killing Them Softly (2012) – 6.2

Just as was the case with Solaris, studios can’t always rely on bankable stars carrying the whole movie and convincing audiences that what they’re watching is great. Killing Them Softly stars Brad Pitt, who plays Jackie, a Hitman hired to gun down two men who robbed an illegal poker game.

The movie builds a fascinating underworld of crime, but audiences could have felt like they were being hit over the head with its strong political messages. Interestingly enough, despite its “F” CinemaScore, the movie was in contention for the Palme d’Or, the highest honor and award a movie can receive, at the Cannes Film Festival.

1 Mother! (2017) – 6.6

Mother! is the most recent major release movie to have gotten the feared “F” CinemaScore. But the movies of writer-director Darren Aronofsky have never been for general audiences or the faint of heart.

The film has a lingering and unsettling atmosphere, which may be what detracted audiences from enjoying it. But that’s also the very reason why fans of the director would have found it appealing. It still has a lot of merits, and the CinemaScore isn’t really deserved. There are worse films that have much higher IMDb scores.
