Dragon Ball Z’s Goku is one of anime’s most powerful characters, but how many of his powers do fans really know about?

The legendary Super Saiyan, protector of Earth, and one of the strongest characters in anime Son Goku has a lot of different powers and abilities. His fighting techniques range from shooting off energy blasts that can destroy planets to beating someone up while playing rock, paper, scissors.

While most people with a cursory knowledge of the extended Dragon Ball Universe know about his various transformations and his iconic Kamehameha Wave, he has a few lesser known techniques in his repertoire as well. These 10 subtler powers don’t appear often in Dragon Ball, but when Goku does use them, they give him the edge he needs to eke out a victory against some impossibly powerful foes.
10. Kiai
You know how in Dragon Ball characters sometimes shout or throw a punch from a distance and the force travels through the air to strike an opponent? While it’s called the Kiai, which literally translates to “fighting spirit”. This technique involves a fighter using their energy to create a shockwave that can strike an opponent or spread through an area.
Goku first uses this technique against Chichi in the 23rd World Martial Arts Tournament, although he goes on to use a much more powerful version of this technique against Jiren in the Tournament of Power after he achieves the Ultra Instinct transformation.
9. Evil Containment Wave
The Evil Containment Wave first appeared in the original Dragon Ball as a means for Master Roshi and Tien Shinhan to seal away the evil King Piccolo. Goku learns this technique much later in Dragon Ball Super when he discovers that Future Zamasu used the super dragon balls to gain immortality.
While he does master the move, he is unable to contain Future Zamasu for long as he forgot to bring the talisman necessary to lock the evil god inside of the jar he brought. Goku doesn’t use this technique often, as he he’d rather defeat his opponents outright than seal them away, but it’s still a valuable technique in his repertoire of moves.
8. Dragon Fist
The Dragon Fist is a non-canonical attack, but it’s so cool that it deserves a spot on this list. When performing this technique, Goku creates a golden version of the dragon Shenron to bind his opponent or add range and power to his punch.

This is one of the few techniques Goku invented himself and it first appeared in the film Dragon Ball Z: Wrath of the Dragon to defeat the giant monster Hirudegarn. It would then appear in critical fights in Dragon Ball GT where he uses it in his fights Super Android 17 and a few of the Shadow Dragons.
7. Hakai
In the Dragon Ball Super manga, which depicts events differently than the anime, Goku is able to use the incredibly powerful Hakai technique. This technique is the signature technique of Gods of Destruction and completely obliterates any person or thing.
Goku uses the almost unstoppable technique against Fused Zamasu, as the evil god was able to regenerate from or shrug off all of Goku’s more conventional attacks. It’s hard to say at this point if Goku will ever perform this devastating technique in the anime, but with stronger foes appearing in each story arc he may soon have no choice but to use it.
6. Regeneration
Following the ritual that allowed Goku to undergo the Super Saiyan God transformation, he gained the ability to regenerate. By sending his newly obtained godly ki into his wounds, Goku is able to heal them almost instantly. While the extent of this power isn’t fully known at this time, it’s certainly a handy ability considering how often gets beaten up.
It’ll also be fun if he ever uses this power as a means to quickly grow stronger, as his Saiyan biology allows him to become more powerful every time he recovers from serious battle injuries. Although considering Goku’s love for fighting and irresponsibility, he’d probably just use this power to extend fights against dangerous foes.
5. Telepathy
Goku somehow gains the ability to communicate telepathically over the course of the Dragon Ball series. Bizarrely he just starts conversing with people using only his mind and other characters accept this ability without much question. Goku’s telepathy is strong enough that he can communicate with people on different planets than him, but he’s also able to read a person’s mind and quickly familiarize himself with a new situation.
This is definitely one of Goku’s more convenient and useful powers and, even if he never uses it to gain an upper hand in battle, it’s allowed him and his friends to save countless lives over the course of the series.
4. Twin Dragon Shot
Goku utilizes the Kamehameha Wave in a lot of creative ways over the course of Dragon Ball. One of this most unique takes on the attack involves him compressing two beams into spheres and then firing them at an unsuspecting opponent. Known as the Twin Dragon Shot, Goku first utilized this move against Freeza as a surprise attack when he realized the space tyrant couldn’t sense energy.

He also seemingly used this move against the fused fighter Kefla as a means to skate along her energy beams and close the distance between them. This technique plays around with one of the most established moves in Dragon Ball and is one of Goku’s most intuitive attacks.
3. God Bind
In the film Dragon Ball Super: Broly, Goku manipulates his ki while in his Super Saiyan God transformation to constrain the titular Broly and have a brief chat with him. This technique is known as the God Bind and is one of Goku’s few restraining techniques that doesn’t put his life in immediate danger.
It’s also likely that Goku is only able to utilize this technique while in his Super Saiyan Red and Blue forms, as those center on efficiently controlling and utilizing his ki. As this technique is a convenient way to break up extended fights and allow opponents to exchange some words rather than shouts, hopefully it will appear more regularly in the ongoing manga and once the anime picks up again.
2. Dragonthrow
The Dragonthrow is one of Goku’s few grappling and throwing techniques, and as such appears regularly throughout the series. This technique involves Goku grabbing an opponent by a limb or tail, spinning them around at an incredible speed, and then launching them towards the horizon or into a nearby mountain.
While it only requires a reasonable level of athleticism to spin and throw a person, it’s Goku’s incredible physical ability that allows him to effectively use this move to deal decisive damage against a variety of foes. It’s also one of Goku’s sillier attacks and a good way to add some levity to overly long and melodramatic battles.
1. Invisible Eye Blast
Goku can blow something up just by looking at it! Goku’s energy is so powerful that he’s able to focus on an object and create an explosion centering on it. He first uses this technique on Namek to bury Vegeta, and later to defend himself from Freeza’s version of the technique.
This power isn’t all that useful in battle and hardly strong enough to do more than superficial damage against an opponent, but it’s still one of Goku’s coolest powers. Dragon Ball is a pretty over-the-top series that goes to ridiculous lengths to show how strong characters are, and Goku blowing stuff up with his eyes along definitely establishes him as a powerful warrior.
