10 Pokémon Ash Just Barely Caught

Throughout the years in Pokémon, Ash has caught numerous Pokémon, some with ease and others through the power of friendship. As with Naruto, that power was always Ash’s ace in the hole, the one thing he could always count on no matter how poor the odds. It’s part of what made him a perfect protagonist.

Not all captures have gone smoothly, as many Pokémon fought until their last breath to make sure they didn’t get captured. Ash’s friendship wasn’t always accepted right away either, Charizard is a perfect example of that as the pair never saw things eye to eye.

Technically, Ash caught the Primeape when he was a Mankey after it stole Ash’s hat. Their relationship worked out fine until he evolved into Primeape, leading to one of the most contentious relationships between Pokémon and trainer.

Primeape never followed Ash’s orders and often went beyond that, doing more damage to Ash than he ever did opposing Pokémon. It led him to realize he needed to give up Primeape to a trainer better suited for his needs.

It’s not often that Ash is forced to go through a whole army of other Pokémon to get to their leader, yet, that’s what happened with Palpitoad, who was anointed leader of a group of Tympole.

While not intentional, Ash and Oshawatt had wandered into his territory, leading to an episode that got to show off some of Oshawatt’s new moves. Even the powerful Palpitoad couldn’t stand up against Oshawatt’s newly mastered Aqua Jet maneuver.

Ash didn’t so much catch Haunter as gain him as a follower, something the young trainer was always good at. They both ended up getting what they wanted out of the relationship as Ash needed a ghost type Pokémon to battle Sabrina, and Haunter (as well as his friends) wanted a new playmate to goof around with.

It led to some tense moments in Ash’s subsequent battle with Sabrina as he just wanted to goof off rather than follow orders.

7 Squirtle

The Squirtle Squad was one of the best episodes in the original series, a squad of Squirtle’s who were a band of abandoned Pokémon and formed up into a gang to cause mischief to those around them, particularly Officer Jenny. Ash soon became the source of their pranks, causing the trainer’s patience to run thin.

It eventually led to a Squirtle knocking Pikachu into the water, forcing Ash to save him from a Goldeen. By the end of the episode, Ash had sacrificed himself to protect the Squirtle, winning over its respect.

6 Pidgeotto

Pidgeotto was the Pokémon who helped introduce the basics of capturing Pokémon to Ash. After capturing Caterpie, Ash thought all he had to do was throw a Poké Ball at them, unaware you had to weaken them.

When he tried this tactic on the Pidgeotto, he merely swatted the ball away as if it were nothing, leading to an extended berating from Misty. Ash’s inexperience nearly cost Caterpie their life before he recalled the Pokémon at the last moment and brought out Pikachu, who helped him capture the bird Pokémon.

5 Farfetch’d

Pokémon is known for its unique-looking Pokémon, and Farfetch’d is up there near the top due to the fact it wields a Leek as a weapon, one it used very effectively in the anime.

Prior to Ash being able to capture him, Farfetch’d put up a big fight against Riolu, refusing to admit defeat before it physically could not go on anymore. Of all the Pokémon Ash had, Farfetch’d was one of the most eager to fight, having pride that could rival Charizard’s stubbornness.

4 Snorlax

Snorlax was one of Ash’s strongest Pokémon and one that needed quick thinking to bring down as he made short work of Ash, Misty, and Team Rocket’s attempts to take him down.

Ash needed to use Jigglypuff’s song to put him back to sleep, the only way he could ever weaken the Pokémon enough to capture. Unfortunately for Ash, once Snorlax became Ash’s, he was often sleeping at the most inopportune times, leading him to leave him at Professor Oaks permanently.

3 Totodile

Any Pokémon who manages to break out of a Poké Ball is a tough customer, and that’s precisely what Totodile was. He not only managed to escape the ball but knocked back both Misty and Ash with his Water Gun attack. He even gobbled up all of Team Rocket’s lunch before sending them flying.

His capture was more by luck than skill as both Misty, and Ash threw Lure Balls at him as he dove into a tree, leading the two to battle over who got to keep him. Ash, naturally coming out on top.

2 Snivy

10 Pokémon Ash Just Barely Caught

Snivy was one of the smarter Pokémon Ash ever attempted to catch, consistently giving him the slip, even laughing at Ash for how poor his first attempt was. It didn’t waver Ash’s determination as he kept trying and trying, even as Snivy kept defeating his Pokémon with ease thanks to their Attract ability.

Pidove’s gender ended up the deciding factor as she was immune to Snivy’s Attract, letting them fight on even ground. As the battle dragged on, Snivy finally let out a smile, showing she accepted Ash.

1 Chikorita

One glance at Chikorita, and you wouldn’t expect her to put up much of a fight, especially against someone as powerful as Charizard, whom she fought against to avoid capture by Ash.

She made up for her lack of size with pure spunk, and stubbornness as there was never a challenge she was going to back down from. It continued fighting no matter the odds. It took Ash saving her from Team Rocket to finally win her over, getting her to join his team.
