Dark Souls 3 includes many covenants for players to join. Each group has a particular goal that ranges from beating bosses, dueling, or outright disrupting the Ashen One. The base game contains eight possible convents, while the expansion of The Ringed City adds the ninth option.

Unlike other games in the Souls series, Dark Souls 3 lets players switch between covenants by equipping specific key items. One can essentially be in all nine factions without having to meet with NPC leaders each time. This lets players go between assisting as a summoned phantom, invading the worlds of strangers, or guarding certain territory.

Covenants mostly serve to facilitate online interactions and reward players that do so with items and powers. The system will be less useful to those that want to play strictly offline or otherwise solo. But, one can also collect reward items by killing monsters that represent members of certain covenants.

Cooperative Covenants in Dark Souls 3

Several covenants are designed to help other players. This can include defeating monsters, an area boss encounter, or protecting against invasions. By default, only two helpful phantoms can assist a host. However, buying the Dried Finger from the Shrine Handmaiden will increase this limit to three phantoms.

Warriors of Sunlight

The Sunlight covenant is directly aligned to help other players fight Dark Souls 3 bosses. If summoned using a White Sign Soapstone, they will become golden and reward Sunlight Medals for defeating bosses. Additionally, when using a Red Eye Orb, there is a higher chance to join up with another invader.

Players can join the covenant by heading to the Undead Settlement bonfire, running through the left passage near the burning tree surrounded by many Peasant Hollows, and inside the house. Drop down into the hole to the right, and one will find the Warrior of Sunlight key item. Note that phantoms and invaders cannot escape the hole themselves, and hosts will need to open the door if they become stuck.

Way of Blue

The Way of Blue will automatically call on either Blue Sentinels or Blades of the Darkmoon to fight invaders. While they can help kill regular enemies, those phantoms will disappear once all invaders are defeated or leave. To join the covenant, go to the Vordt of the Boreal Valley bonfire/boss room. Now, run in the opposite direction, past the two Lothric Knights, and into the small chapel. Speak to the NPC, Emma, and she will hand over the Way of Blue key item.

Blue Sentinels

As mentioned above, Blue Sentinels will be summoned to assist those in the Way of Blue. They will gain rewards if an invader is killed or the host makes it a boss room; they will not be compensated if an invader willing leaves the game. One can join the covenant at the Halfway Fortress bonfire by talking with Anri of Astora about the key item.

Blades of the Darkmoon

Blades of the Darkmoon are functionally similar to Blue Sentinels, helping to combat invaders. However, they will earn double rewards for killing members of the Aldrich Faithful. In addition, there is a prerequisite of learning a gesture from Sirris of the Sunless Realms through her Dark Souls 3 questline. To do so, head to the Old Wolf of Farron bonfire, circle the outdoor perimeter, and pick up the Dreamchaser’s Ashes. Deliver this item to the Shrine Handmaiden, and then speak to Sirris for the Darkmoon Loyalty gesture.

To join properly, teleport to the Anor Londo bonfire and move the elevator to the upwards position. Once it has stopped, head to the bottom of the shaft and walk across the empty path – this is merely an illusion and can be walked across. Then, drop down to the right, use the Darkmoon Loyalty gesture on Company Captain Yorshka, and she will offer the key item.

Invasion Covenants in Dark Souls 3

Dark Souls 3 How to Join Every Covenant

Dark Souls 3 invasion covenants are all about attacking other players, halting progress, or defending a location. Typically only one invader can be present at a time. However, hosts that used the Dried Finger can have up to two invaders at once or five if summoned with a Red Sign Soapstone.

Rosaria’s Fingers

Rosaria’s Fingers are the most active invasion covenant, gaining rewards for killing players all over the world. In addition, they are the only covenant that can respec stats or change appearance by turning in reward items. After defeating Longfinger Kirk at the bottom of the Cathedral of the Deep, unlock the shortcut he was guarding back to the Cleansing Chapel bonfire.

Within this hallway is an elevator leading to the upper rafters of the chapel. In the crisscross section, there will be a Cathedral Knight wielding a greatsword. Drop off the left side of the ledge he is standing on and head up the steps to meet Rosaria, Mother of Rebirth, who will give the key item. Note that progressing into higher ranks will anger Sirris, making it harder to join the Blades of the Darkmoon if one hasn’t learned her gesture.

Watch Dogs of Farron

The Watch Dogs defend Crucifixion Woods, a mid-level area commonly populated by those around level 35 – or above 100 if on New Game Plus. Summonings will happen automatically. From the Keep Ruins bonfire, descend the incline ahead, circle to the right, and climb the long ladder. Speak to the Old Wolf of Farron to join up.

Aldrich Faithful

Aldrich Faithful defends Irithyll against those that have already defeated Pontiff Sulyvahn, typically around level 75 or above. To join, teleport to the Pontiff Sulyvahn bonfire, head left past the giants, into the tower defended by two Aldrich Faithfull, and hit the left side wall corner. This will reveal a long ladder leading to a lair with two Sulyvahn Beasts. Defeat both of them – or just the one on the far left and sneak by the other. Next, approach Archdeacon McDonnell’s corpse and search for the key item.

Specialized Covenants in Dark Souls 3

Some covenants have unique behavior aside from the normal help or invade. This can include changing loyalties or unique abilities. For the latter, one will need the second Dark Souls 3 DLC pack, The Ringed City.

Mound Makers

This is the wildcard faction, seeking out hosts, phantoms, or invaders. This means that they may help the host or hinder their progress depending on how many other players are already in the game. Go to the Undead Settlement bonfire, run to the bottom area with the burning tree, head right across the bridge, through the crates on the right, up the ladder, and drop down the right side to find a Hollow Manservant with an empty cage on its back. Climb inside, and he will take you to Holy Knight Hodrick, who yields the key item.

Spears of the Church

Spears of the Church can replace Halflight as a boss encounter. They cannot drink estus in this state but will be assisted by a few Church Guardians who can heal. Additionally, one can use Ritual Spear attacks at no FP cost. Still, it may not be enough to combat players who have brought two or three phantoms to the fight.

To join, one must first weaken Darkeater Midir while it sits on the bridge leading to Halflight. Afterward, warp to the Ringed Inner Wall bonfire and ride down the elevator. As it descends, roll through the left side passage, turn left again, and head down the ladder to fight Midir directly. This can be a difficult encounter when using phantom allies, as Midir will whip around constantly. It becomes much easier to fight the dragon solo so that it is continuously facing the player. Once it is defeated, it will drop the key item to join the covenant.
