Whether it’s because they haven’t been deemed cute or interesting enough, or because they appeared in a controversial episode that caused seizures, for whatever reason these anime outcasts haven’t found their way into many episodes of the main series.

1 Porygon Was Culled After An Episode It Appeared In Caused Seizures

Porygon was at the center of a major controversy after the 38th episode of the original series aired in Japan on December 16, 1997. 685 children were taken to hospital in Japan as a result of having epileptic seizures from watching the episode. Named the “Pokémon Shock” by Japanese media, the episode caused shares in Nintendo to drop, was parodied in The Simpsons, and created a stigma around Japanese anime.

In the aftermath, Nintendo ordered the episode to be pulled, and it never aired again. Even though it was a scene involving Pikachu that caused the seizures, because Porygon was the main Pokémon in the episode, the Virtual Pokémon bore the brunt of the blame and has since only made brief — and mostly static — appearances in the anime.
