Will Ash’s Primeape Reappear Before The Pokémon Anime Ends

The Pokémon anime has a number of unexplained mysteries and dropped plotlines, but there is one character who fans have been hoping to see again for over twenty years, as Ash Ketchum’s Primeape last appear in 1997 and its fate is still unknown.

In the early days of the Pokémon anime, Ash Ketchum generally kept the same Pokémon on his team throughout the Indigo League. He had a few in reserve (like Kingler, Muk, and his Taurus) but he generally saved them for battles where he knew they would be helpful. One Pokémon that Ash caught during the early days of the anime was Primeape, but he only kept it for four episodes before giving it up. In the episode called “The Punchy Pokémon”, Ash takes part in the P1 Grand Prix, which is a tournament for Fighting-type Pokémon. At the end of the episode, Ash leaves his Primeape with a trainer named Anthony in order for it to train.

“The Punchy Pokémon” was first broadcast in Japan in ’97 and that was the last time that Primeape appeared in the Pokémon anime, outside of cameos in some of the intro/outro sequences. Ash has sent other Pokémon off to train before (like Charizard) but has called them back when he needed them, but he has never gone back to reclaim Primeape, who must be super buff after twenty years of training.

It has been easy enough for the writers of the Pokémon anime to forget about Primeape, especially as the show became cyclical and focused on new regions that were appearing in the game, but the latest incarnation of the show is different. In Pokémon Journeys: The Series, Ash is taking part in a massive Pokémon world tournament and visiting each region in turn. Ash is currently assembling a dream team of powerful Pokémon for what fans think could be his final run as the protagonist of the series.

If Ash Ketchum’s days as the main character of the Pokémon anime are coming to a close, then the fans should finally be given closure as to what happened to Primeape. Ash is currently using the Kanto region as his base, so there’s no reason why he can’t go to Fuschia City and seek out the Pokémon he left all of those years ago. Ash currently has a Riolu on his team, so the Fighting-type spot has been filled, but even a single storyline that involves the Primeape would be something. If Ash’s time is drawing to a close, then the window of opportunity to learn the fate of Primeape is growing smaller with each episode. It’s likely that the producers of the Pokémon anime assume that no one cares about a Pokémon that hasn’t been seen in twenty years, but an appearance would be appreciated by the long-time fans of the series.
