Michael Schur has become a bit of an icon in television. His sitcoms, including Parks and Recreation, Brooklyn Nine-Nine, and The Good Place, are the perfect antidote to a cynical world. They often feature characters who believe in making the world a better place and who believe in something positive.
Schur also tends to use actors repeatedly in several series. Here are ten of the most noteworthy repeat actors that you have might have forgotten about.
10 Jason Mantzoukas
Mantzoukas has so far appeared in all three of the sitcoms listed above. He is, to put it mildly, a bundle of frantic energy that often seems like he is going to burst out of the screen and right into our living rooms. All of his characters are almost too intense, a fact that is seemingly referenced in The Good Place, where his cosmic mind is reset repeatedly. It is precisely his intensity that makes him such a charming character.
9 Maya Rudolph
Maya Rudolph was, and is, one of the greatest comic actresses of her generation. After cementing her reputation on Saturday Night Live, she went on to make appearances as a marshal in Brooklyn Nine-Nine and a celestial judge in The Good Place who holds the fate of humanity in her hand. In fact, it is her combination of sass and power in the latter that makes the last couple of seasons of The Good Place so enjoyable and so philosophically stimulating.
8 Kristen Bell
Kristen Bell is, in many ways, the beautiful and charismatic heart of Schur’s The Good Place, in which she plays the indomitable and sarcastic Eleanor. Before that, she made a small but very important appearance in Parks and Recreation. In that series, she plays Ingrid de Forest, a woman from the city of Eagleton (later Pawnee) who eventually claims Leslie’s seat on the City Council. Though not as evil as some from Eagleton, she still hurts Leslie.
7 Patton Oswalt
Patton Oswalt is, quite simply, one of the most adorable and charming comedic actors working today. He appears in both Parks and Recreation and Brooklyn Nine-Nine. In the former, he plays a bit of an annoying antiquarian who squares off with Leslie.
In the latter, he plays the captain of the fire department who, it should go without saying, makes Jake’s life miserable. Though they do eventually have a bit of a bonding moment, they ultimately go back to competing with each other.
6 Nick Kroll
Some people simply excel at playing characters that are both incredibly irritating and yet somehow charming, and that is certainly the case with Nick Kroll. His most indelible creation for Schur has certainly been his shock jock character that does everything in his power to make Leslie’s life miserable. Given his penchant for playing annoying characters, it comes as no surprise that he plays a similar nemesis in Brooklyn Nine-Nine, undercutting the members of the 99th Precinct.
5 Jenny Slate
Jenny Slate has, like Kroll, managed to solidify her career by playing characters that are somehow both incredibly irritating and yet also oddly endearing. In Parks and Recreation, she plays the absolutely infuriating sister of the (also irritating) Jean-Ralphio. Like Jean-Ralphio, she has a tendency to break into what she no doubt thinks is singing and, like her brother, she exploits Tom’s goodwill. She has a very small appearance in Brooklyn Nine-Nine, where she portrays the mistress of a gangster.
4 Marc Evan Jackson
Marc Evan Jackson has the distinction of appearing in all three of Schur’s major sitcoms, and in all of them he plays a very different character. Probably the best so far is Kevin, Captain Holt’s no-nonsense and logical partner in Brooklyn Nine-Nine. However, he also showed that he has the ability to play a phenomenal demon in The Good Place, in which he is the indefatigable nemesis of the four main characters, determined to bring about the end of humanity.
3 Adam Scott
What can you say about Adam Scott? He somehow manages to make the straight man into one of the most charming leading men in a sitcom. As Ben Wyatt in Parks and Recreation, he was the perfect companion to the zany, lovable and competent Leslie Knope. Like Jackson, however, he made a pretty substantial transition in The Good Place, in which he plays one of the most vulgar and malicious of the demons set against the good guys.
2 Bradley Whitford
Bradley Whitford, most famous for starring in series such as The West Wing and in the horror film Get Out, also makes appearances in Parks and Recreation and Brooklyn Nine-Nine. His appearance in the latter is a truly interesting one, as he plays Jake’s distant and philandering father. Despite the fact that Jake comes to hold his father in absolute contempt, Whitford manages to imbue him with a mixture of charm and rakishness (some of which his son inherited).
1 Eugene Cordero
Jason, the dim-witted hunk of The Good Place, probably wouldn’t have gotten nearly as far as he did – nor get into nearly as much trouble – if it weren’t for his second in command, Pillboi. One gets the feeling that Pillboi isn’t quite as much of a dunce as Jason, and you have to give the man credit for being willing to stick with it with Jason, despite the latter’s many crazy schemes. He also had very small parts in both Parks and Recreation and Brooklyn Nine-Nine.
