10 Holding Down On The D-Pad Switches To The First Item In The Shortcut Menu

Cycling through items in Elden Ring is pretty easy… except for situations where players are caught in the frenetic flow of combat. Trying to avoid enemy attacks and accessing items on the quick menu can be quite annoying.

Thankfully, by long-pressing down on the D-pad, players can jump over to the first item in the quick access menu. So, you should ideally keep the Flask of Crimson Tears as the first item so that you can jump to it and use it at a moment’s notice.

Power Stances are a combat system that was present in Dark Souls 2, and this mechanic has been replicated in Elden Ring to great effect as well.

By dual-wielding two copies of the same weapon, you will automatically adopt a power stance that enables a cooler and more damaging moveset. Just make sure to manage equip load properly while trying to use this mechanic.

Demi-Humans are a type of enemy that players can find scattered all across the map of Elden Ring. They can be extremely challenging to beat since they almost exclusively appear in groups, along with a harder leader-type enemy as well.

To make these encounters easier, you can try focusing on the leader and killing them as soon as possible. This demoralizes the rest of the assailants and makes them surrender to your might.

6 You Can Hit Enemies With A Strong Attack Before Backstabbing For Extra Damage

Backstabbing is a classic mechanic from Dark Souls that makes its way into Elden Ring as well. With the addition of the sneaking mechanic, it means that you can nail even more satisfying backstabs in the open world.

That being said, you can optimize your damage output before a backstab by landing a strong attack first, then following it up with a backstab. It’s a great way to land some extra damage and helps whittle down the HP of tankier enemies.

To stagger an enemy, you need to combine various special attacks such as jumping strikes, guard counters, and strong attacks, to name a few. This pressure needs to be consistent as well, and backing off will lead to an enemy’s stagger meter depleting fairly quickly.

4 You Can Avoid Damage While Mounting And Dismounting Your Horse

Torrent is a lovable horse that players gain access to early on in their playthrough. This mount is great for traversing the open world, with mounted combat also being possible for the first time in a FromSoftware title.

What most people might not know is that you actually have I-frames (small windows of invulnerability) while mounting and dismounting Torrent. The former is a great way to escape without being worried about your horse… or yourself as well.

3 Holding Down The Strong Attack On Horseback Deals Consistent Damage

Players can use both light and strong attacks on horseback. The former works as you would expect, with the shoulder buttons letting you attack on each side of the horse.

You can also use a strong attack on horseback, with a rather interesting thing happening if you hold down this button. As the Tarnished is charging their attack, the weapon still has an active hitbox that damages enemies and is a great way to get some extra damage in while looking pretty cool in the process.

2 Parrying An Enemy On Horseback Knocks Them Down

Enemies that are on horseback can be pretty annoying to deal with, at times. Thankfully, you can forcefully knock these enemies off their mount by parrying their strike.

It’s a great way to land a powerful hit on a knocked-down enemy. Just keep in mind that you can also be on the receiving end of this attack if you’re knocked down, and boss enemies on horseback (such as the Tree Sentinel) can’t be knocked down like this.

1 Rainbow Stones Can Be Used To Gauge Whether A Drop Will Kill You Or Not

Rainbow Stones are items that you can use to mark interesting areas of the map with ease. For the most part, they’re fairly useless since you can open the map and place custom markers, but they do serve another extremely useful purpose.

By dropping a Rainbow Stone from a ledge, you can gauge whether the fall will be fatal or not. If the stone shatters, then you should try and check out an alternative route to drop down to this lower area.
